Read the book SUGARBUSTERS. It is really good. You basically need to do 3 things.
1. Cut out all BAD carbs. The bad carbs are the carbs that turn to sugar. Try eating whole wheat bread and pasta instead of regular white bread and regular pasta. Also try Sweet Potatos over regular.
2. Eat 5 times a day. I know that sounds weird, but it isn't. Most people think if they stop eating, then they'll lose weight. Skip a meal here or there, well this isn't true. If you stop eating then your metabolism slows and eventually stops, which means everything you actually do eat, doesn't "burn up." Here's a sample way of eating 5 times a day (this also involves waking up early and going to bed early):
At about 8:00 am eat some whole wheat toast with sugar free preserve or some whole wheat oatmeal with some Splenda or other sugar substitute.
At about 10:00 am eat a snack like grapes and nuts or something like that.
At about NOON eat a good lunch, like a salad or celery soup.
At about 2:00 have another snack, like some fruit (try avoiding bananas.)
At about 5:00 eat a senseable dinner. Try baked skinless chicken, brown rice, and a baked sweet potato.
Then eat nothing after 7:00 unless it is fruit. In that case stick with apples, plums, and grapes.
3. Exersise! It gets your metabolism running. The best way to get it running is by walking about 2 miles a day. It sounds hard but trust me, it isn't.
I really hope that helps. again try reading that SUGARBUSTERS book.

Try finding a local dietician to find a diet right for you. Also, go to your local gym and sign up with a personal trainer. These are the best ways to lose weight since you've got two people holding you accountable to the weight loss.
If you don't have this kind of money (and I'd really suggest you find the money if you're serious about losing weight), try www.calorieking.com for a diet plan and to find some really great people to help you out. Start exercising in whatever way is comfortable to you. Sit down and write out a plan and hold yourself to it. If you can't, find someone (friend, family member, significant other) to give your plan to and have them check up on you.
The web has lots of sites and your library has a ton of books. Really sit down and plan out what you need to do to get this done and if you're serious, you can. Good luck!
