Hi Dave...because everyone here is located from all over the world consider posting an ad through a free online service such as Petfinder http://www.petfinder.com or your local Craiglist Indiana http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/in under the Community and then subsection pets. Be sure to ask for a small adoption fee (e.g. $15) to disuade people who are looking for a free pet to sell to research labs, use for dog bait training, or worse mistreatment. Ask prospective adopters that you would like to conduct a home inspection monthly for 3 months to ensure the well-being of the cat as well. You can negotiate the adoption fee if you feel you have found a good home and refund the money after a few months. People scour Craigslist every minute daily so you may find someone pretty quickly.

Theoretically (since I'm not allergic so can't experiment and have no volunteers), its the cat's dander that you are allergic to and that being so, if you wiped down your cat daily, you ought not be so allergic to it. Also, allergy shots might help. Many animal shelters have a very limited placement policy--if the animal is not adopted within a very short given amount of time, they will kill it. If she must turn in the cat, she should call the local SPCA to see if they have a no-kill policy (a healthy, people friendly cat will be kept until adopted). And watch out, if she will do that with her pet, who knows how loyal she'll be to you (you too are replaceable).

Why don't you just take some Claritin or Reactine? I would never ask someone to get rid of their animal for me! And if someone asked me to get rid of any of mine, that guy would be out the door so fast!!! Her cat was with her 5 years before she met you, it'll still be there for her 5 years after you to have split up. Stupid girl.

I would take it if I lived in your area! but since I don't you should run an add in the local newspaper or just print up some fliers there is always some loving soul who will take in an animal in need good luck to you, the kitty, and your girlfriend!

She obviously doesn't care about her cat, if she's willing to get rid of him, just because she's dating someone new who's allergic. Now, if ya'll were engaged to be married, MAYBE it'd be more acceptable...but if/when ya'll break up, she's probably gonna resent the fact she gave up her cat, if she ever cared for him in the first place.

Your NEW girlfriend? What a doormat. Only a real wimp would give up a supposedly loved pet for a NEW boyfriend. I hope that cat gets given to someone who deserves it!

People who are allergic to cats are allergic to the cats saliva and dander. Regular bathing can help.
