Criminal Profilers are basically students of humanity. They study people, usually their bad sides. Based on evidence, they can reconstruct the personality behind the the acts, and hopefully narrow down the investigation and before the criminal can strike again. They are often used in cases of suspected serial killers.

To become a profiler... you need degrees in criminology and psychology basically. After that, you get recruited into a large law enforcement organization, duing junior analysis work, and hopefully get assigned to a case that will make you a famous profiler. Though most of the time you'll just get assigned a simple case and do drudge work until you get "the case".

I am pretty sure they don't make much in their official capacity. They are usually called in as consultants and have a private practice that brings in a lot more $$$.
