In Christianity the Holy Spirit convicts a person. Without His conviction, you won't seek out a Holy God.

Simply because some believe and some don't. There are many, many varieties of believers, you'll find them in all shapes and sizes and personality types. I don't think it's a pattern at all, although I'd venture a guess that people will be making smart aleck remarks about how religious people have no brain, while non religious people do. (Or something to that effect, or perhaps milder)

It is a combination of many factors... Their chemical balances or imbalances. How many things they have read and/or studied. I personally was raised Catholic, but began to read into various religions from Greek to Buddhist to Sumerian to Hindu to Egyptian and so on, and found that most of the stories I was brought up to believe in (about Jesus, namely) were recycled from older religions, and that all religions shared the same myths. This has made me a non-believer in the Christian faith, while I still believe that there is a higher intelligence responsible for man's many symbolic stories of it. I do not believe any of the myths are literal though. I believe the processes of God are beyond description.
But I've gotten away from the point.
The point is the less you know about different things the more likely you are to blindly believe in one.

There's a distinct difference between "religious people" and "spiritual people." I think those that are religious are so becuase of habit. Most people who are spiritual, are generally looking for something more.
When you consider that Islam is the fastest growing religion on the face of the earth, even though there are plenty of other faiths and plenty of evangelicals out there trying to convert people to whichever religion or faith. You have to wonder why Islam? It appeals to the poor. It gives them power through the promise of violence -- through the promise of 1,000 virgins in heaven or what ever. It denounces all other forms of religion.
Generally, people need to believe in something bigger than themselves. And then, there are the athiests. They believe only in themselves. And in that shortsighted thought, if the whole world should follow their lead, then who would believe in them? No one.

Gullibility. And I feel bad for saying that, because I don't want it to seem like I'm saying "All religious people are stupid" but they aren't very big on thinking for themselves. People who aren't religious or create their own type of spirituality are probably less likely to believe something just because someone told them to.

If you are emotionally invested in your religion than it becomes a necessity to connect with people of your same beliefs.

(2Corinthians 4:4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
(Romans 10:3) For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
