As the previous posters mentioned, you can mimic it for the purposes of recipes by adding lemon or some other acid to milk or you can substitute buttermilk, which is similar. But sour milk is a little different from either, this article explains: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sour_milk

Was your grandma from scandinavia or northern europe?

Sour milk is kind of like buttermilk...

in a measuring cup, put 1Tbls vinegar or lemon juice and then fill with milk to make 8 oz. Let sit five minutes. Stir, then use in your recipe

Maybe butter milk?? Never heard sour milk. Your best bet would be, if you don't get the answer here, is to ask someone that is older. May have something to do with adding something to the milk to sour it, but you would still have to do that and know how..

Just pour it down the drain. Sour milk is basically organic and not harmful to the environment. If you really got picky, then totally let it curdle, then leave it outside for bugs and microscopic organisms to digest. It will be smelly and unsightful, though.

I do believe it is the same.

You can add a Tablespoon of lemon to "sour" a cup of regular milk.

If a recipe calls for sour milk, you can use buttermilk. The buttermilk will give you a slight tangy flavor. Good luck , and happy eating.
