Inner Mongolia is a province of the People's Republic of China. Outer Mongolia is a country in its own right.

Sandwiched between China and Russia, Mongolians are fond of neither country. They believe they were abandoned by Russia following the collapse of the USSR, and have mistrusted the Chinese for centuries.

I have traveled extensively in Mongolia and China, and was amused to be told, on a number of occasions that "the Chinese work too hard". On the other hand, Chinese acquaintances were quick to point out that "Mongolians are lazy".

Mongolians do appear to have a very laid-back approach to life. Rural Mongolians are nomadic, love their horses, and are always willing to share a glass of vodka (or fermented mare's milk) with a weary traveler.

The issue of the rights to land is currently under discussion; if the government decides to allow rural land to be purchased and fenced off, the nomadic lifestyle enjoyed by a third of the population of the country will undergo a drastic transformation. This bodes ill for prospective travelers, but might improve the quality of the cuisine. Mongolian food is the worst I have ever tasted.

Food reservations aside, of the 20+ countries I have visited in my travels, Mongolia is by far the most fascinating. Go there.

An exotic (that does not mean hot) location, the people resemble neither Chinese nor Russians in appearance, they have rosy cheeks, and a lot of the girls are beautiful. I travelled around the countryside a fair bit, up to the Russian border and out into the hills in a jeep, beautiful open countryside.
The main city of Ulan Bator is dirty but has a few good bars and restaurants, fairly expensive to stay in unless you like dormitories.
Dave has a good English pub right on the Sukhbataar square which I frequented a lot, nice place to see the sun go down over the square and the last bar in town at street level to get the rays.

I liked the country a lot, but they should keep the streets cleaner, there's only really one of them that tourists would be on.

Yes, my best friend was there last December 2005, in Ulaan Bator, the capital. It's a great country, and with a lot to see. The Mongolians have high level of education. They have a space astronaut; the world's champion sumo wrestler is from Mongolia! Their ethnic music is a wonder to listen to. There are very few people for such a big space. They produce cashmere, which is great for winter clothing. When my friend's allergy broke out, he consulted a Mongolian doctor and that doctor was educated in Germany. The ointment that the doc prescribed was very effective. It's a German ointment of course.
