Invention and application are separate in terms of origin of flight. Just the idea of flight could be considered invention. Ancient Greeks had stories of flight as with Pegasus the winged horse and Daedalus who with his son made wings to escape from imprisonment. Many other stories of flight exist in the annals of human history. So even though the Wright brothers seem to be the first to actually achieve sustained flight in a vehicle called the airplane I would not credit them with the invention. Man has been trying to fly as far back as 400 BC with contraptions of feathers and wax and sticks with cloth and other wild forms of construction. The answer to your question will rely on your definition of "airplane".
