The best source of information is a good Yorkie message board. You'll find a lot of knowledgeable owners and breeders who can steer you in the right direction. Once you settle on a breeder, you can ask in a few of the boards and you will likely find a few owners of that stock.

That's how I got my doodle and I couldn't be happier. I knew exactly where she came from and who her parents are. I had a great resource when she was young and each time I take her to a romp organized by the doodle group I belong to, it's like meeting family.

This is a great board with over 15,000 members

Good luck in your search.

I would also echo the advice you got from those saying no pet shop puppies. Unfortunately, pet shop pups learn to toilet where they sleep and that's a hard lesson for some dogs to unlearn. Also, very few reputable breeders sell to pet shops. My sis has a pet shop Japanese Chin.... it looks almost exactly like a Papillon and not much like a Chin. It's cute and a very good dog but she's not the purebred my sis thought she was getting. (not that it bothers my sis at all)

I looked for my first Yorkie for about 8 months. I did lots of research on breeders and genes. I wanted to make sure that he had good genetics. I'm glad I did all the research, cause I've seen the horror stories too. But he's a healthy boy, and I've never had any trouble with him. I looked for my second Yorkie for about 6 months. She is four months old now, and still healthy and doing great. I would just check the breeder, make sure they are a reputable breeder. Steer clear of breeders that say "teacup" or "miniature"... there is no such thing. I would also recommend getting one that wil be around 4-5 lbs. My male is 4 and my female is about 5 right now. I've heard the bigger they are, the less health problems they have. I know there are people that have smaller ones... I would be happy to give you the names of the places I bought from. I know they are good people, and good breeders. Feel free to send an email if your interested.

P.S. NEVER EVER buy from a petstore!!!

I do not agree with the "what you pay for is what you get" aspect in choosing your Yorkie. My sweet little boy was only $550 and he is the sweetest most adorable little thing ever! Some breeders just don't feel it neccessary to charge such high amounts. I also highly dicourage buying from a petstore. Yes, they are probably just as wonderful little doggies but you may be supporting a puppymill.

I had that some problem too. First of all, don't buy on line; too many scams. Second, talk to a vet, they can help. And third, what you pay for is what you get. I buy my Yorkie this Summer at the pet shop for $1,500. She is a pure breed and is a perfect 4.5 lbs. She hasn't had any problems what so ever!
