My cat has this thing about the dryer. She jumps in everytime I open it. Even if the clothes are wet inside, she just has to jump in and check it out. What fascinates her with the dryer so much? I always check for her before I turn it on but sometimes I have to take her out of 3 or 4 times while I'm loading or unloading it.

One of mind love the dryer too. I think it's partly because after it's been in use, it is so warm (and cats are heat seekers). Plus, she truly loves it when her bedding and blankies get washed so I'm sure she relates the smell of newly cleaned bedding to the dryer. It also is a darkish, enclosed space which a lot of cats love (mine love boxes and bags and tight crawl spaces that you wouldn't think a cat could fit into, they even love playing in their carriers although they only go to the vet in those). Just always check the dryer before closing the door--I've heard too many stories of people finding a dead cat or kitten in the dryer after it's run it's cycle.

This quotation is from _Cats for Dummies_, by Spadafori and Pion, DVM, in the chapter on common household dangers. (p. 335). Apparently machines are very tempting hideyholes for felines----and quite dangerous.....

"If you find your cat in the dryer, oven, washing machine, or dishwasher, take a deep breath and do something that seems cruel but has your cat's best interest at heart: Scare the fur off him. Close the door with him inside, and then pound on the appliance for a few seconds, making a racket that could wake the dead. Then open the door and let him make his escape. You can't always be sure everyone remembers to keep appliance doors closed or checks for a cat before hitting the "on" switch. Convincing your cat to avoid such sleeping places provides another kind on insurance against tragedy. We wouldn't suggest such drastic measures if it weren't such a horrible way to die."

(My Gargoyle-kitty gave me a bad look when I was typing this--'scaring a cat?-hmffff!', but agreed that "the end justifies the means" when it comes to keeping furbabies safe.)

I am helping train two cats in a new house and Ive found that carrying a spray bottle of water helps. When they do something wrong we spray them in the face. After a few times they stop doing those things. It make take longer for some cats, because some are stubborn. If your cat likes water and doesn't care that it is being sprayed, try a bitter apple spray they sell in many stores. There are many different sprays you can buy for animals that do not hurt clothing or skin, or most importantly the animal! Good luck and if you open the drying and find a puffy dry cat, just change his/her name to fluff-ball or lucky!

I have a cat that likes to watch the washing machine fill with water. None has ever been attracted to the dryer. At least you know your cat has this fascination. Many unfortunate cats and horribly guilty owners have had tragic accidents.

Cats are naturally curious creatures. Luckily, mine listens when I tell her "no" when she considers looking inside the dryer while I'm loading/unloading.

Hey, I had a cat that did that, too! I always thought she was the strangest cat on earth. Do you want her to stop, or does it bother you? Just tell her NO in a firm strict voice and maybe spray her with a little water or lighty tap her nose. You definatly dont want to do to her what my ex did to mine, it was the meanest thing ever, that's why he's my ex!!!

cats are crazy.. mine like to sit on top of my tools whenever i am working on something. she does her best to NOT touch the floor while traversing the house. she will not eat anything but tuna fish... shes nuts.. so i say your cat likes your dryer because it is crazy.

Can't say why except cats are curious. Giving it a 10 second spin might cure her of the curiosity - or make it worse, depending on how crazy it is.

It's like a cave! My cat is like that with raised blankets (like tents) or open cabinet doors. It is dark and mysterious... :-)

I doubt she would like it anymore if she got stuck in it, though. Thanks for being careful!
