The Freestyle (crossover) & Five Hundred (sedan) are both built off the same platform, right here, in Chicago. This is one of the 2 factories that used to build the Taurus (& Mercury Sable) & the Taurus Wagon..

That is probably why so many people , wrongly , assume that this is the replacement for the discontinued Taurus. The Fusion actually replaced the Taurus.

The Freestyle is actually based on a Volvo platform. Ford ownes Volvo. I've often said that the Freestyle looks like a Volvo Wagon on Steroids. (in a good way)

The only thing that the Freestyle has in common with the old Taurus is that its STANDARD (& only) engine, the 3.0 liter Duratec, 24 valve V6 was an OPTIONAL engine in the Taurus.

Now if you look at the specs on paper ...you might think that this engine is underpowered for this size vehicle. But if you actually drive it, you'll see that the CVAT transmision enhances this engine beautifully!
The Continuously Variable Adaptive Trans. makes the 200 HP V6 'feel' like 250 HP. There are no gears to shift, so you don't get any of that 'lagging' in between gears, like you would with a typical automatic trans. Therefore enhansing this engines 0-60 time.& this is what also contributes to fuel economy.!!!

This vehicle is also very versitile & is available in an AWD version, as well as FWD. In either case Traction Control is standard.
Standard 6 passenger seating, but 7 passenger is a 'no charge' option. The driver seat sits up about 6" higher than the typical luxury sedan, making it much easier to get in & out of, but not up so high (like an SUV) that you have to climb up into.
The 2nd & 3rd row seats sit up even higher, theater style, and are very roomy.
It also has great Safety ratings & features.

Here's the link that compares it to other popular Crossovers, but don't take my word for it. Go DRIVE one! You WILL agree!

They are a safe vehicle too, there was one involved in a head on colission recently with an older LTD at 70+mph... All 3 occupants of the Freestyle survived.

No problems so far. A recall was just released very recently for door latch replacements. But other than that, they are great vehicles.

I think they are great, have plenty of room, and plenty of power.
