To get your state and federal reps to meet with you, first convince them that you are a millionaire looking to make a deal with someone in power.

I'd advise seeking a new job. If you're desperate, you can lick the stamps before using them.
As for meeting with your congresspersons (or local authorities), you probably can't. I'd reccomend writing a letter, either asking for an audience or explaining the problem. The latter would probably be most effective. Send a letter to your local governer, your senators and your representatives in the house. You can find all of their mailing adresses at your state or county's website (I think).
If you must meet them in person, break into their office. It's best if you make a dramatic entrance, such as leaping through the window. I assure you that you'll recieve their undivided attention.

Most legislators have local staffers. You can call these folks and request a meeting, which may or may not happen. I suggest you also write letters to your representatives and if they don't respond, write letters to your local paper telling your story, including the fact that your rep. did not return your call. You can also send press releases to the local media telling them your story. Think about joining with other moms in your community to form a political action committee (PAC). Conduct a sit-in at the legislators office at the state capital. Bottom line? You must become an advocate for the causes you believe in. The sqeaky wheel gets the oil.

Billie, you need to get active! One reason your elected officials won't listen is because you're poor and, traditionaly, poor people don't vote. If you make it clear that you are willing to organize, get political, and be effective, they will at least pretend to listen. It also sounds like your ADC, a Federal program administered by the state, is using your states outdated format. Go to the Feds if you can and bypass the state.

It's hard to do anything as an individual if you're disenfranchised. I would suggest finding a social service organization that works with people in your situation and volunteer to act as a witness before your state legislature. Contact a local or state women's rights organization or advocacy group and volunteer your services as a speaker and give testimony on hard it is to survive with the money you receive. Is there a state office of displaced homeworkers? A workforce investment board (WIB)? A state office for the commission on women? If your local legislator isn't friendly on women's or poverty issues, find one who is and contact his or her office. If your local state senator or congressperson is a Democrat, than reach out to him or her directly. They may have a staff person on board who is familiar with someone in your situation who can help you.
Good luck to you!

Poltics is crazy. Sorry for your problems. You can call their offices & request a meeting but it is very hard to meet with them. Lots of people wanting to meet & little time to meet. If you know someone who works for them, they can usually get you a meeting. I have met both of my Senators - I knew the retired not voted out Senator.
