Download Ubuntu and burn it to CD; the latest version of Ubuntu is a "live" CD. this means you can run the entire operating system off the CD without writing anything to your disk. You can easily try it (it will be a little slow off CD) to see how it works. I have been using it for I while and I love not be worried about viruses and the my machine being slow to boot and shutdown.

I think that ubuntu linux would be a good first distro. Perhaps there are better ones out there, but this seems to be easier to set up than most.

You might try OpenSuSE too.

Just as an aside,
if you want to monkey around with linux b4 sacrificing a hdd,
you try Knoppix? Mepis?
Those are 2 live bootable cds that i know of that won't touch your hdd.
I hear ubuntu is newbie friendly.
I use gentoo.
