Well, my Yorkie had his hair cut in October (mid october). It was supposed to be a trim, but she pretty much butchered him. His hair was shorter than a puppy cut, and really choppy. Now that it's growing it is all uneven, drives me nuts. The groomer was in a hurry, and she got my dogs haircut confused with another dogs. Okay, mistakes happen, I understand that. I'm just having a hard time finding another groomer, I took him to her about 7-8 times. He needs his hair fixed, I would do it (I have groomed dogs (and currently groom my parents dog), and other animals before, just not Yorkies!) ... I guess my question is... Has this happened to anyone else before?? and... I'm in college in SE Kansas, but am from NE Oklahoma... Know any groomers that are good in this area? I've search, but I don't know anyone around here that knows how good they are. I currently have 2 Yorkies, and they both need a trim... so I'm desperate.

I will mention that I have had friends have trouble with the petsmart around here... I'm picky with my babies.

I was afraid of that happening to me with my Yorkie so I went to store and picked up a pair of dog scissors and did it myself. It's doesn't look bad at all! I did Google some pics and how/where to cut, but that took me 15 minutes! In the end, I cut her hair myself, and even if I did messed it up, at least I wouldn't have to pay for it!

The best way to find a good groomer is by word-of-mouth. People who love their dog's groomer will tell you all about them, and the same goes for those who've had bad experiences. (kinda like us women with our hairstylists!)

This is what I tell my clients who are moving out of the area:

Don't call, but VISIT the shops you're interested in taking your pet to, PRIOR to making an appointment. While there, look around inside. Is it clean? Does it smell (keeping in mind that a dog may have just had an "accident")? How are YOU treated? Do the groomers take the time to answer your questions (they might have to keep working while doing so if they're on a time schedule, as most are)? How much experience do they have? Do the dogs on the tables and in the cages look fairly calm? While talking with the groomers, observe how the dogs are treated. Ask if there are any dogs that are finished that you can take a quick look at. Even though it might not be a Yorkie, you should get an idea of how nicely (or not) the groomer's finish work is.

When you settle on a shop and bring your Yorkie in for his first appointment, ask to speak directly to the person who will be grooming him. Make sure you don't leave until you feel confident that the groomer knows exactly what it is that you want done, and on the flip-side, make sure you listen to anything your groomer tells you. (communication is a two-way street!) If you're not happy with the job, tell the groomer exactly what it is that you don't like. If you can't do that, they can't fix it!

Good Luck!

What are you trying to have it look like?

Yorkies are very easy to groom, you need to wash and condition and let the hair grow. They don't need cuts really because their hair is long and it can be tied up on it's head with a bow or ponytail holder. So if you are veering away from breed standard then you need to describe to a grooming shop over the phone what you need and ask if anyone is good at doing that. You may have to call around for awhile.

Is there a PetsMart near you? I've always had good luck with them in both CA and in Virginia... Shows consistency. And they're very reasonable.
