Cats love to snuggle anywhere it's warm. Blankets and clothing are especially nice. Even if they're cold, they can curl up and make a "nest" out of it, insulating their body heat.

Usually older cats (and all cats) lay on clothes. They are always looking for warmth. It reminds them of their mommy cat. My 4 1/2 year old cat (stray) still snuggles up to me and on clothes. It reminds them of the mommy and makes them happy. Just don't lay the clothes on a reachable cat place. They want the warmth, it is like a comforting little world to them.

Cats lay on everything in sight. My cats love clothes fresh out of the dryer when they're still warm.

I agree with most of the other answers, my cats have always done the same thing. Even a neighbour's cat (she was quite neglected and turned out to be pregnant) decided to give birth in my closet on a pile of my clothes, rather than in the special birthing box I made her! I agree that they must be comforted by them, whether the texture or reassuring scent, I don't know.
Why do they also love to sit on piles of paper, in boxes, on plastic bags etc? gotta love 'em.

My cat prefers dirty clothes, especially a sweatshirt I've slept in.

From the Cat's Guide To Training Your Human:
** For sitting on laps or rubbing against clothing, select fabric colour which contrasts well with your fur. For example: white furred cats should go to black wool clothing.**

It may be the warmth that still lingers from the dryers, or they might like the fresh smell of clean clothes. My cats do this too. Usually it's just anything extra for warmth.

If they've just gotten out of the dryer, cats love the warmth. Other times, they just love having something clean to lay on.

My cats like to lie on clothes fresh out of the dryer because they're still warm.

I think in the case of my cats it's the warmth that attracts them. I have forced hot-air heat in my house, and when the blower comes on they like to lie close to the heat registers.

They know they belong to you. And wouldn't you rather lay on cushions than a hard floor? I would. Even though you have washed them they may still have your scent, or the cats are putting there scent on them. I have a dog that runs of with my smelly socks after work, just because they stink of me, I then have to retrieve them from her basket :)

My two cats do the same thing I think secretly they know thats the one place their hair hasn't been shed onto so theywant to make sure they leave their mark hahaha.

Not really I agree that they just want to curl up somewhere comfortable where they can trap their body heat.

But for real its weird how as soon as its clean.........
