I think that it makes it easier for praying because you have to remove your shoes 6 times a day and wash your feet. This would be easier wearing sandals. Is this why?

I'll bet Alaskan Muslims don't wear em.

Very likely. They also don't wear their shoes into their home so again, sandals make that easier.

I only wear sandals in the summertime. It's even too cold in the south to wear sandals all the time!

It's like doffing the hat in the Church.
In the Eastern Culture, you do not carry the dirt from the street into your house and the Mosque is considered the House of God, very much like the Church, so you show your respect for God, by doing this.
Incidentally, Eastern Christians, also, do not wear their shoes in the Church.

Its 5 obligatory, and I live in Canada, I wear boots (Timberlands actually), if you live in a hot place you wear sandals. Like why do Cali girls wear flip-flops?
