on being a career mom or married to one? I want to have a family, but I also want to keep working, and homeschool my kids, what are your opinions?

I am graduating soon to become a vetrinarian. I don't think I'll be able to work from home, so I'll have to quit my job I guess when I have kids

For Homeschooling I mean at least until high school, and I'd like to have a large family.

I don't like the local school system, and I want to homeschool, because I was homeschooled until high school.

Tell me after graduation why you could not open your practice out of your home? You are your own boss. Make your own schedule. You can do this. And have your family life as well. You control. Not the world around you. Good luck.

Well if you want to have a family and homeschool your kids and keep working you can do this by either two ways. One have your husband be a stay at home Dad, and you work to support the family (he could probably bring in some money doing work from home) OR you work from home and do the home schooling. If you want to be that active in your childs day to day life (very comendable) it will take a lot of time out your day, so you won't have much time to do very much 'work'. If you try to do a 40 hour job plus homeschool your kids, there will never be enough hours in the day. You will be stressed and tired and of no use to anyone, work or family.

It sounds like working from home might be a good option for you. If you're going to homeschool your kids, which is a full time job, you'll need to be home. Technology is so great today that lots of stay at home moms can work from home. Check out your career field and see what your options are.

Opening a practice from your home is a good idea, though will probably have to add onto your house - a big investment. But I think you're being unrealistic about being able to work and home school. Home schoolng is a big commitment and it would be insance to try to do both. What are your reasons for wanting to home school? If they are religious reasons, perhaps you could send your kids to private religious school on your salary. If your reason is because you don't like your local school district, again, private school may be an option.

Well, keep working but why homeschool your kids. I take it you mean kindergarden or something like that. Thati s ok, but how do you plan on doing that. Kids going to school is a good thing because it teaches them to interact with other ppl and behave. It also gives you a break and after all a change of seanery for the kids. And once they grow up and move out, mostl iekly it'll be your job that'll keep you busy.

I think its a great idea to be a career mom or married to one.
If your wanting to have a family though, I would reconsider the homeschooling the kids though. It would probably be better for them to go to a public school. then that way you can work around the school hours and be home for the kids when they get home.

It's really a personal decision. It seems like no matter what decision you make (to work, to stay home, to home school, to public school) someone is going to have something to say about it. If you stay home some people will act like you no longer have a purpose and are leaching off your husbands income. If you work some people will act like you are selfish and don't love your children. Every woman faces it....and the truth is what ever works for you and your family is what's right. The real problem lies with a society that is never really supportive of women and expects them to be everything to everyone.

working mom's are great.
home-schooling moms are great

but they dont mix well.

home-schooling a child takes a lot of time and effort. it will be extremely hard for anyone to hold down a full time job while homeschooling a child.

If you have a part time job, you may be able to handle it, but it will still be very stressful.

I know this is probably not the answer you want to hear. just an honest opinion.

Hard but not impossible..

It's easy to be a career mom and neglect your kids, but it's easy to stop pursuing your goals in life FOR your family.
Find a time balance. You should send your kids to school, it will make them more socialble and it will build up confidence.
If you do decide to, I suggest being home when they're home, but working when they go to school.
This way, you'll be there when they need you, and you can still be career-oriented at the same time.

Just please remember, don't go overboard on either.

Well, there is always the option of part-time, but that pretty much cancels out homeschooling. I think you should devote your time to your children and do what you think is best for them. If that means giving up your career, then that's what you have to do. Good luck!
