Home schooling or normal school, and why?

Normal-- as in public schooling.

Reason: Friends, new people, social experiences, rules, school dances, relationships, cool teachers (at times), a reason to get out of the house every weekday, and chances to explore career choices.

Normal school, most ppl make their biggest group of friends in school....altho your children could get friends through clubs etc as well i suppose i think not going to normal school, they would miss out on mixing with people from diverse backgrounds and getting to know ppl that may have different interests etc, in a club everyone may be into the same thing from the same type background. School teaches children about acceptance and getting on with a wide range of people, important for life and in future when they come to get a job. They also learn about the rules of society, following rules, being within a power structure, all things that will help them deal with the outside world effectively as an adult. Altho it shows a caring parent wanting to protec children and keep them at home, children can be too sheltered and grow up not able to deal with social conventions and the harsh realities of life, the independence required for a successful adult life etc. Most children are v happy at school. I was really happy at school and my biggest group of friends are still from my secondary school. Plus they'l get the broadest education there. Unless the parent hires a tutor for 6hrs a day or is a teacher themselves the education will be limited. Even as a teacher the parent wont have a specialism in all subjects, so this is a prob and self study only works so far!!!!

As a parent of two children who spent some time in both, I would say that homsescholling is much better and here are some reasons:

1) There is much more opportunity for the child to gain skills in areas that they are interested ion
2) It takes less time per day to cover the schoolwork
3) The kids learn to be more independent thinkers
4) Homsechooled children are normal ahead of children taught in normal schools.
5) Problems with bullying don't exist
6) Opportunities exist for the normal activities with other kids after hours, but there are many more opportunities for other activities which kids cannot engage in during school hours.
7) Flexible hours.
8) Influences such as sex and druges are minimized.

The argument constantly used for normal school is socialization. There was an email that I saw once where a woman told another woman that her child should be in high school to get socialization. The second woman took the first to a school during lunch hour, walked down the hall, and asked - which of these behaviours do you want my child to emulate?

The truth is that there are always the same aopoortunities for socialization after school as exiost for every other child and a great deal other opportunities, so there really is no advantage to normal school, other than the cost for individual parents is lower. But in my view, the small cost is well worth it.

For myself, public or private school. I did not have a family environment that would have been suitable for homeschooling.

For my kids, homeschooling, at least for now. Why? Because as a former teacher, I know what it's like socially and academically in the schools here, and my husband, as a current junior high teacher, feels the same way. We have a close family, have opportunities to get out a lot and give our children an education that best meets their needs without them being in the school society where it is a constant advertisement for bad behaviour and attitudes, brand-name clothes and phones and PSP's and so forth. If watching TV each day can influence kids--and adults!--to want certain things they see advertised on TV and to affect how they might talk or the things they might do, then being in such an environment for 35 hours a week is not the type of influence we want for them in their formative years.

I would prefer everyone to be OK with everyone else's choices, that's what I would prefer.

It's estimated that about 1% of our country's children are homeschooled. That means that 99% of people choose 'normal' school.

Therefore, it's not surprising that the majority of the responses here will favor "normal" school.

But I ask you this, what is a "normal" school? Would you say that a school in Beverly Hills would be the same as a school in the Bronx? Or would a normal school in the middle of Texas be the same as a school on the peninsula of Florida? What is a normal school?

And are private schools "normal"? What about montessori, waldorf, free schools, magnet schools, charters, virtual schools, boarding schools, and prep schools? Are they considered normal?

This question got a huge number of responses. Why? People wanted to say "woot! My way rocks! And is way better than other ways of doing things."

A lot of people voted "normal" school on the premise that the social opportunities are more vast. Well, I ask, if that's the case, why don't "normal" school kids take the time to understand kids that don't do things the way that they do? Shouldn't all that exposure to "different kinds of people" give them wonderful insight and understanding of different ways of doing things, including homeschoolers?

Anyway, I prefer homeschooling - not because it's better, but cuz it works for us. All the myriad of other ways to educate are good too. Just, they don't fit with our educational philosophy.

So, here's a question for you - why does your question matter? What are you really trying to ask?

Normal school

Normal school. I think that home schooling doesn't give you the same social experience that you would find at at normal school, especially friends and things like that. It's a better way to get out and meet new people.

My daughter homeschooled, went to public school and private school. Every option had advantages and disadvantages. And, I would choose all three at different times, depending on the age and circumstances.

I read the responses of those who would not chose home school. My daugher did not "miss out" on any social interaction or experiences. Most of the people who we know home schooled didn't miss out either. I think that is what people say when they are inexperienced with the home school topic. I would only listen to people who have "actually" home schooled in order to get a more accurate view of home schooling.

When we home schooled, my daugher had MORE social interaction with kids her own age and other ages. She was able to learn at many different levels and experience things that people in "normal" school would never get a chance to experience. She had lots of friends, played sports, band, dance and many other activitives. She did public speaking a lot and was not just stuck inside of her house only with her family. Home school success or failure all depends on how each family decides to home school.

I liked home schooling because it does prepare you more for the real world in that you have to assign your time to complete a task. You have to learn to schedule yourself and responsibly finish your work. My daughter really benefited from that part of home schooling.

I would also like to commend the people who recognized that they probably wouldn't be the best teachers to their children. It is a very hard job and if you don't think you can or should do it, then public school is definately better. For some people, it works out great; for other people, it doesn't work out well.

At 5th grade to 8th grade, she needed to go to normal school because I didn't not have the knowledge I needed to be able to home school her. I could have struggled throught, but I surely would have missed things. Public school also had advantages and disadvantages.

She is now 19 years old and we are glad that she had experiences in each of the different school types.

I like a variety of schooling experiences, but everyone is different and should choose what type of schooling is right for them.

put me down for Normal School
Aside from medical reasons, No one has ever convinced me home schooling is as good as normal school. At its best its pretty silly option for those blessed materially enough, who already can access the best public/private schools, who have the time, money, resources, and talent to home school.
I am totally convinced Tammy T's and Glurpy's kids would have excelled in normal school and these parents would be a great asset to the PTA.
That being said, IMHO its just a selfish option, unless the parents are trying to hide something, that's selfish too, but also disgusting

For myself, I would definitely have chosen public school, but I was in a very abusive, dysfunctional family, and needed the escape. We lived in a ghetto neighborhood where outside play was dangerous. It would have been a bad homeschooling environment.

My kids are homeschooled, we have a stable loving family, and live in a town where there are dozens of daily activities and hundreds of homeschooling families. So not only do they get the best in academia, but the best in social skills and extracurricular activities. If we ever had a major disaster, medical or financial or something, we would do public schooling, but not like it. My kids love to be homeschooled, they love that they can slam out their school work and then go hang with friends or work on hobbies.

They have plenty of time alone with friends, and in social clubs like scouts, 4H, band, tae kwon do, baseball, library, etc.

I would have to go with normal school (public/private) because you get to interact with all different kinds of people, play on a JV or varsity sports team, you can get away from your parents for a while, friends, dances, and the experience, you will learn a lot more in normal school then in home schooling.
