Your pre-occupation to oceanography will probably not serve you or the Navy seals in a productive capacity. They have an agenda that you must adhere to, and its doubtful that they will share your interest in the study of the sea. Having said that, if your interest in becoming a seal goes beyond enhancing your studies than I say, put in your request, but first it might be helpful if you joined the navy.

Your interest of Oceanography is to be commended. When the SEALs go scuba diving, they are always on a mission. Oceanography can however, be applied to Navy Science. As an oceanographer you could be asked to
Issue weather forecasts and warnings
Prepare up-to-date weather maps and oceanographic information
Take readings of barometric pressure, temperature, humidity and sea conditions
If you have a BS degree, you can receive a commission as an officer in the navy. Or if you don't the Navy reserves is open. You may also wish to consider the Coast Guard, which has assignments closer to what you are seeking. For the best information, about any branch, contact your nearest recruiting office.

Are you serious? They are commandos, and only about 1 in 10 make it in. Why would you go in the seals if you want to study the ocean. They only use it to get where they are going. If you manage to make the SEAL's you will almost certainly see some combat, so don't join unless you plan to be in combat, because the navy is training those who wash out to be a naval form of infantry for security.

SEALS tend to whine a lot. Hell I know one Master Chief who thinks that seals are as good as marines, I didn't laugh because he was about to retire so I cut him some slack.
Military SCUBA is not about oceanography, its about underwater navigation, search and rescue, and covert infiltration.
Go to a school down in Florida. If you can't afford the school than join the military and perform like a man, get out and use your GI bill to help pay for college.

You cannot choose to go into the SeALs, you must first prove yourself in the Navy and then request entrance. BUD's is extremely difficult and if you're only joining to become a diver then you'll wash out before the first day. All branches of the military have divers.

Oceonography has very little to do with SEaLs. Besides getting accepted and passing BUD/s isn't exact;ly as easy as passing your open water certification....
