I need to take my cat to the vet for him to get fixed since i have 2 female cats. I was wondering what they usually do at the visit. What kind of shots will they want to give him (i know rabie shot is required by law), and what else goes on at the appoinment. And how long will it take for the process?

Well the visit consists of a little "snip-snip" they go in and tie a knot, sorta-speak! They'll usually have you drop him off in the morning and pick him up in the evening, unless there's complications, in which they'd keep him over night! Some vets give you the choice of just pain killers or anesthesia, you should definatly choose anesthesia, it's less stress for the animal. He goes to sleep and wakes up not knowing what he's just been through!

Rabies and the FRCVP series are the "core" vaccines for cats. The rabies vaccine can be given if the cat is older than 16 weeks. Cats are safest exclusively indoors, but if they must go outside, talk to your vet about what other vaccines he or she recommends. Also look into getting the cats microchipped, it gives them a permanent ID that can be traced back to their owner their whole lives as long as the information is kept current. Many hospitals will ask you to drop the cat off and allow him to go home the same day.

In addition to the above answer, they will probably want to give him 3 shots; one of which is for rabies. Then he'll have to go back for boosters. The 1st visit will probably cost close to $100 not counting the neutering.

Why aren't you getting the females spayed? It isn't pleasant for them to go into heat & even tho they're inside (I hope) they will probably attract tom cats. They will want to go outside & they can sure slip out the door - sometimes without your even knowing about it. Do you have an inexpensive spay/neuter program in your city? If so, why don't you take them there? I foster cats for a local shelter & you can't imagine how many cats/kittens are euthanized daily in this country. Pls take care of the females; its the responsible thing to do.
