Loreal Preference. For me it turns out just like the picture on the front of the box. It doesn't fade as fast as some other brands either. Especially if you use shampoo and conditioner formulated for your hair color like John Freida Brilliant Brunette.

I'd recommend a revlon or clairol product, but make sure its the color that you want coordinating it will the color hair you already have.
Also if you want a better look after you dye it get a self streaking kit and you'll look fabulous (just don't get chunky streaks they're a too harsh look)
When in dought go natural
Good luck
P.S. Don't go to far from your natural color if this is your first time because you might absolutly hate the change.

Go to a health food store and find NATURCOLOR. Permanent herbal based gel. It has no peroxide in it but colors great! Color last for a long time and will color gray. I have red hair that is hard to color and look good. This stuff looks completely natural and is great color!

I used L'Oreal Natural Match to go from chocloate brown to natural black most recently. I don't usually use drugstore color, but I really did like the color and shine the Natural Match gave me.

I have used Clairol Natural Instincts and love it. I have used other brands, but nothing came close to this. For me (a brown), I used gingerbread.
