she is usually very active, and she is just laying in her box with the pup...... is it normal for them to have a long time between pups? she isn't acting distressed, but she isn't "up and at 'em" either.... and she growled at me when i touched her back near her tail.... just a few minutes ago.
NO VETS are open at 7 at night....
I called the vet this afternoon, and they said it can tale up to 12 hours to finish delivering, but I wondered about the time between pups!
AND JUST FYI..... she will be spayed asap : )

Some dogs will just have one pup specially the first time. You should take her to the vet tomorrow and have her checked to make sure there are no more pups inside.

One puppy is definitely not "normal". You should get to the vet ASAP. It is always possible that a puppy did not make it. Also I was told by my vet that usually at the end of a delivery there will be A LOT of - gross - afterbirth, lots of green and red. He said that would help to signal to me that there were no more puppies. And that if I didn't see this there could be another puppy or a problem that would require a pill from the vet to help it come out.
I had a similar situation with my dog. She was only 10 months old. The first puppy came and then 8 hours went by before she gave birth to 4 more. The last four though came one an hour. She is a small jack russell so five puppies seemed like a lot, but the vet said this was normal. I did not know she was pregnant when I "adopted" her so I didn't get her to the vet until very late and there was not much they would do other than give advice. All went well though and dogs have excellent instincts that will surprise you. Please get to the vet if you are worried.

you beagle, is she healthy and has she had any previous illness? If this is her first litter it sometimes happens but usually if a puppy or puppies are not well and there is some defect the mother knows and will seperate them from the rest and not let it feed. she may just be clumsy or there is a problem with the puppys. But i believe ylou should take the puppies and try boddle feeding them if she keeps killing them. if another one is suffocated then take them away and put them on a formula either one bout in a pet store or make your own. evaporated milk works very well. if you didnt make sure they were all feeding from the start that is a problem because if there not getting enouph nutrition they will die. Try mixing up a little bottle ot evaporated milk some pancake syrup and a pinch of salt. or but electolite formula.. anyway thats all the advice i have

If she hasn't had any more by now 1:am, then I'd sure take her to the vet as soon as he opens.
It's 'very' rare for a dog to have just one pup.
It's usually at least two or three, so one is very suspicious to me.
She may have one stuck in the birth canal.
Does she act uncomfortable, as though she's in pain.?
Does she seem restless at all?
These are signs that something could be wrong!!

VET NOW. Don't wait for anymore answers.
Did your dog get pre-natal care? How many pups were on the ultrasound?
VET NOW. Period.
EDIT TO ADD: EMERGENCY VETS ARE ALWAYS OPEN - and if you would have gotten her the pre-natal care she deserved, your vet would have given you the information to either have them paged or the number of the 24/7 animal hospital nearest you. That dog may die if you force her to wait through the night to birth a dog that may very well be stuck and or too big to birth without a c-section. I doubt your vet told you to wait 12 hours for pups to be born. Get the dog to the vet immediately!

GET HER TO THE VET NOW!!!!!!!!!
She may be having problems, it is very very unusual for a dog to have one puppy. Dogs have two ovaries and they both ovulate (release at least one egg) every time they come into season. She should of released at least 2 eggs (only one egg/puppy is extremely abnormal), and being that she is a small dog the other puppy may be stuck (it is a fairly common problem). She needs to go the the vet NOW! it could kill her and her puppies.
Plus, isn't better to be safe than to run the risk of loosing your dog and her puppies.

My dog just had one puppy her first litter. She is a small dog though, after she had it I had her fixed. I would say that if it's a small dog your ok, but if it's a bigger dog that you should go to the vet. If I were you I would at least call your vet to see what he has to say.

Its not normal but she could have only had one. My advice would be to call the vet and ask them before you take her and getting a bill for no reason. It can all Depend on her age if she is older or younger that really isn't to odd. But call the vet to be sure.
