I have heard that sometimes a guy gives their girlfriend a promise ring promising to later get engaged and marry. Just wondering what people think of this?

A promise ring or friendship ring is a ring given to a boyfriend or girlfriend, to promise to be committed in a serious relationship, usually a precursor to marriage. These indicate that serious courting is under-way. It can be given as a symbol that a couple does not feel that it is an appropriate time to consider engagement or marriage but are serious about each other and their relationship.

A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world.

I think a promise ring is a cute idea to show other people that you are taken, you're serious about eachother and you are planning to get married eventually!!

There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, my fiance did that for me. For our six month anniversary he bought me the promise ring. He let me pick it out in order to figure out what style of ring and cut of stone I like. It also was a great way for him to figure out the size of my finger so that when he went and bought the engagement ring he could surprise me with it. There's not a lot of people who buy a promise ring now, but it is something that some guys still do. I see nothing wrong getting a promise ring. It shows their commitment and allows them the opportunity to save up the money to get the engagement ring. It also allows the guy to find out the size of the finger so that he is able to surprise the woman with the engagement ring without giving away hints by getting her finger sized or making the woman wait to wear the engagement ring while it gets resized.

Never heard of a "promise ring", neither has my family and between all of us we have over a 100 years of marriage. What is the promise that comes with the ring, and if it is a promise of a future engagement then just get engaged!! Think it is just another jewelery ploy to sell rings.

The last time I heard the term "promise ring" I think I was in junior high school! It sounds a little retarded once you are over the age of 18 though

confident. in case you opt for to teach her your love and dedication, yet can't arise with the money for the lavish engagement ring and wedding ceremony that she merits at this element on your lives, then a promise ring is suitable. it incredibly is a symbolic of your love shifting from yet another relationship to a real dedication with out the cost tag. My mom nevertheless has her promise ring from my father. He have been given it for her quickly after college. i'm walking in his shoes now, and would purely arise with the money for a $500 promise ring immediately. She merits a $3k engagement ring and a lavish wedding ceremony that i won't arise with the money for for yet another 2 or 3 years. it incredibly is a private purchase, yet an incredibly symbolic present. additionally, having some metallic on her hand will shop the hounds off her on the bars and such.

IT'S THE BETWEEN GOING STEADY AND ENGAGED RING. IT'S JUST A SMALLER VERSION OF THE ENGAGEMENT RING. MOST NEVER GET PAST THAT RING, THEY BREAK UP AND ARE LEFT WITH A RING THAT THEY DON'T WEAR. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

a promise ring is not expensive as a wedding ring. It will mean whatever meaning your loved one assigns to it. I think it is a more adult version of going steady, like when your boyfriend gave you his ring to wear.

honestly, sorry but it's just some childish teenager thing meaning close to nothing. Guess it means you are going steady.

There's really no such thing as "being engaged to be engaged."
