When a microwave starts sparking, how long do you have before it explodes\catches fire, and which of these is most likely?

I wouldn't know, because when a microwave starts sparking I do the bright thing and stop using it before it gets to the point of a fire.

Well you've missed the really important point.
To see the sparking you must be looking closely into the microwave.
Your eyes are made up of mostly water and a microwave works by agitationg water molecules.
So when the microwave if making nice sparkly things your eyes are being cooked from the inside - That goes for your liver as well.
If its sparking - Turn the F£$"ing thing off quick

Hi!
The question is whether the sparking is in the microwave oven internals, or in the cooking box. If in the box, the reason is usually some conductive material is inside, like gold foil on a plate, or a metal particle inside of a ceramic cup. In either case, either open the door to stop the sparking, Pull the power plug for either internal or box problems. Most internal problems will blow a fuse or circuit breaker. In the box problems can be exciting, but usually not explosive.

If sparking is inside, probably you should clean it and remove brownish fumes remnants. It normally should NOT used without some water containing load inside because it's easily damaged if operated without load.It does not catch fire or explode anyway but better not try.

The correct protocol is to put a dustbin on your head (prevents brain disintegration) and rubber gloves (for insulation purposes) on your feet and call the police - either use a phone box or a neighbours house, your mobile will have been rendered ineffective by the rays.

is it sparking or arcing? either it needs a clean or you put metal in there-check for foil, metal trimmed plates a fork etc.
