My Persian cat apparently loves to gnaw on the fake leaves of the Christmas tree. She's done it to a Halloween decoration as well which was made from the same stuff and other plastic decorative plants. Why does she do this? It not like it has a taste to it and it looks more like she's brushing her teeth the way she gnaws it. We checked for stuff in her mouth so at least she's not eating it. Help please?

Cats like to chew on plants. Be careful with poinsettias. Although not severely toxic, poinsettias can give your cats an upset belly with some vomiting. To help keep your cats happy and away from household plants, provide them with wheatgrass to chew on.
The Christmas Tree. Pets adore these as much as you do. Cats like to climb on them until they fall over. Dogs prefer to body slam them. Pets and youngsters can get cut feet from stepping on broken ornaments. Dogs and cats sometimes like to mark trees with urine. Dogs like to eat ornaments and candy canes, including the wrappers. Many pets like to chew on light cords, which can shock or kill them. Dogs and cats eat tinsel, which can lodge in their intestines and cause a blockage.
If you have pets, anchor your Christmas tree to the wall in two spots for stability. Avoid all edible ornaments, and avoid putting breakable ornaments near the bottom of the tree. Tape light cords against the tree or wall, so they aren't lying on the floor, inviting your pets to chew on them. Avoid tinsel altogether if you have young, playful pets. They see it as a moving, irresistible toy.
Make sure your pets get plenty of attention and exercise during the holiday season. This makes them less likely to get into mischief. Check with your veterinarian for more suggestions.

Yes! It's not edible and he can't digest it: it could cause a potentially fatal intestinal blockage. You could try putting orange peels inside the branches. Cats don't like the smell and it may keep him away from the tree. In the meantime, provide him with greens he can gnaw on instead. You can plant a pot of wheat grass or millet seeds and once the sprouts get to 2" or so high, let him have it. Good luck!

Its like a big gnaw toy! I had the same trouble with my cat... I was concerned because you don't want your cat swallowing that stuff. Just buy some cat grass and put a small pot of it at the bottom of the tree. Worked for me. Merry Christmas

Cats always seem to have digestive issues.If you're not feeding her hard food start.If you are feeding her canned food stop.Grow some catnip in a planter for her.My kitties sometimes like to eat dry leaves that my shoes drag in from the yard.String is bad for cats....and they will eat it.Talk to the vet to make sure there are no real issues and like children make sure the things she shouldn't get into are out of sight.

Maybe she needs a chew toy. she could be bored. Try playing with her. Use a piece of string. cats love string.

My cat knaws on things like that to. Its normal, don't worry about it, but don't encourage it.
