Assuming that your tenants arrived in the US legally check with the USCIS, that's the new INS under the Department of Homeland Security. If your tenants has a case with them you might be able to find out from there, but chances are probably good that they won't release any info to you.

OK a couple of bits of information you have missed. 1) what country are you from 2) why did you overstay? You say you desrve to sleep without pills and that you cry, well You have broken the law, there should be some comsequences. You do realise your employer sould be fined £10 000 for employing you don't you? Also you are taking a job that someone who is here legally sould have. Why not leave the country, then apply to come back legally.

I don't know about already residing tenants. But, you can ask for proof when they apply. Credit check, ID, etc. No one has an excuse for providing shelter to these criminals.

Ask them for the Social Security number for a credit check...if they don't have one...good chances are that they are illegal. BTW..many state now have legislation pending banning the renting to illegals....thus placing stiff fines on landlords.
