I know what it means and I've been hearing how awful it is but what does the law actually say and how does it effect dogs and dog owners?? I'm confused and didn't find anything helpful yet by searching online. Thanks.

Are dogs actually killed because of these laws? That just seems totally insane.

Explain WHAT Lucy? Your comment doesn't make any sense.

Yes I know it's regulation but how exactly? If an ordinance like that passes does it mean people who own those types of dogs will actually have them taken away or are there just restrictions of some sort?

Thank you raven and Iluv, that's what I wanted to know. Forgive my ignorance but I just had no idea it was that bad and that was why I was asking. The idea that the government can actually murder your pet is so horrifying and scary! It's amazing to me that something like that would be allowed to happen in the US. It's sad that people are not more informed about these things. Something really needs to be done to stop this madness! Thanks for the info.

I found a website- http://www.pitbulllovers.com/pit-bulls-denver-breed-specific-legislation.html that talks about Denver and how they have been murdering people's pets. There are also links to petitions we can sign against this crap.

Breed specific legislation is exactly what sounds like...regulation of your right to own or, in many cases, not own a dog based solely on the breed of dog, not your responsibility as an owner.

Laws enacted by city councils banning a specific breed...they do NOT work, yet public opinion fueled by the media focusing on specific breed attacks drive them. Politicians want to please & be re-elected, so they ban: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc, etc - because of the few offending dogs owned by thugs. Then the vast majority of people who own sweet, properly raised & socialized dogs of the breed de jour have to surrender their loving pets to death...while the thugs just move on to the next breed. This is why BSL will NEVER work...but, it is easier to knee-jerk ban an entire breed rather than write much better "punish the deed, not the breed" laws - and ban thug OWNERS from owning dogs. Sad that things are handled this very wrong way.

It is generally legislation of what breeds you can have, but in some areas it can just be regulation on how you have your dog. In some cities, if they find your dog they confiscate and then kill the dog (usually pit bulls). But in some cities you have to have a special permit, extra insurance, and have the dog micro-chipped. It just depends on the local legislation.

I think that it is horrible and stupid. Not to offend the small dog owners, but 99% of the mean dogs that I have had to deal with have been the small toy and terrier breeds. I have never been attacked by a large dog, and the one mean large dog I have been around was able to go through behavior modification training and is now a very calm dog. I have never ever met a mean pit bull, doberman, or rottie.

Yes dogs are being killed because of these laws. The guy next door was just going thru Denver and had his pit bull. He had car trouble. A policeman walked up to ask if he needed help saw his dog that was on a leash in the back seat pulled out his gun and killed it. The judge ruled the policeman was in the right because pits are banned in Denver.
In Ill. If past Bill SB1790 will ban these breeds
Pit bulls.doder pinscher, Rottweiler, German shepherd, Siberian husky, malamute, chow chow, great danes, st. bernard, akita. Those of us trying to fight the ban on pit bulls have been telling people it is only a matter of time before they start on all large dogs. Well here we go. Who's pet will be next? If the breed you love is ban because someone thinks, unfairly, its to dangerous for people to have as a pet, you will wish you listened

Sign up for updates on BSL's on Yahoo. I get updates and emails everyday that are very disturbing. Denver has a total ban on Pitbulls as does most of Washington state as well as many other's. From what I have found most states have laws that restrict Breed Specific Laws but the individual towns and counties are able to override those laws most of the time. Many time the dogs are restricted so heavily that owning them is nearly impossible. Check out www.pittbulllovers.com

Italy and Germany have outlawed Pitbulls as well as many others, Italy alone is up to 41 banned breeds including the welsh corgi.
very sad. Help in the fight and sign up, get educated and write to as many majors, council members and judges as possible to help the dogs that are being killed for inaccurate, biased information that is outdated and pushed by politicians with political agendas as well as inaccurate Media reports and paranoid public.

BSL is alive and kicking contained in the united kingdom, and confident, it incredibly is all incorrect. and greater, we've a super gray section now because of the fact human beings have been attempting to get around this law re Pit Bulls, by using breeding them with Staffies. So any Pit-Bull/Staffie style canines is being targetted now too. i'm horrified that the Rottie is being banned in Australia. Breeders/followers must be weeping!
