I'm in the middle of my third year at University of Pennsylvania and think it's about time to buy some loupes. Which would you recommend.

Orascoptic loupes are the best and probably 2.5X are the best to start with. If you need to watch the budget, get a pair of Orascoptic Pearls, which I think are 1.5X, primarily aimed at hygienists.

For my first pair, I let them measure me and stuff, but I got the flip up loupes as I was afraid to get the TTL set, thinking I had not been measured correctly. Not that it was THEIR fault, but they ask you to look in this little device and see different objects and I was just not sure I was doing it correctly. With the flip ups, you can read the book and make adjustments yourself as you get accustomed to using them. However, the TTL sit closer to your eyes and the alignment seems to be more forgiving than the flip ups that are farther away.

If you can handle the cost, get the Zeon light also. THIS is as important to me as the magnification.

Designs for Vision. Hands down. Best optics. No "glare shadow".
Mine have the loupes set in the lens. I think that is the only way to do it -- no need to adjust angles, width, etc.

Not the most stylish -- but function is more important than esthetics - always.

ORASCOPTIC FLIP-UPS ARE ONES I'VE HAD SINCE MY 3rd YEAR OF DENTAL SCHOOL. THE DIFFERENCE IN DOING DENTISTRY WITH AND W/O LOUPES IS NIGHT AND DAY I HAVE THE LONG FOCAL LENTH 2.6X. I ALSO USE A WELCH-ALYN L.E.D. LAMP. BECAUSE IT'S SELF-CONTAINED THERE ARE NO WIRES TO GET IN THE WAY.
HAVE FUN!
