My roommate's girlfriend lives with us and she has 8 animal's in our smaller house. Now shes one of those people that gets an animal and gets bored of it after 2 weeks and gets another. So she likes to show dogs at shows, now she keeps these 2 dogs in cages all day except like 2 times a day to go out for a potty break. Her reasoning is that show dogs need this kind of treatment so they'll be good for a show? Is that true?

Ha, Marcy is ridiculous! We should lock her in a cage and leave her there all day!

Um no. Show dogs actually need a ton of exercise and interaction to be good in shows. Exercise makes the dog well muscled, which is needed to do well in shows. Mental health is even more important, a dog without good muscle mass, etc will do horribly in shows. Direct her to her local breed association (find them through www.akc.org), and tell them to explain to her proper dog care. Keeping a dog in a cage is borderline cruelty.
My show dog needs three half-hour walks a day just to keep in shape to even be competetive with the other dogs.
She shouldn't be allowed to have any animals.

No!
Most show dogs are also pets, and are treated as pets. That kind of treatment is not acceptable.
I take it she's not showing them? If she were, she might be getting better information from other handlers and breeders.
If she's bored with them, they need to go to a new home where they can be treated right. Call the ASPCA anonymously if needed.

Bull, I showed Rotts for years. Mine were not kenneled or caged unless they were at a dogs show and then most of the time they were with us on a leash. I believe even show show dogs should have a life and be loved and part of the family. Believe it or not that also makes them much, much better show dogs. It's amazing what happiness can do.

Well this is a tough one if she is keeping them especially for show then no. If they are to be a companion then yes it is really cruel to keep them locked in a cage all the time. Also how big are the cages? The cages should be big enough that they can stand up in without back touching the top and have twice the length of them. If the cages are to small then that is neglectful also. Not all show dogs need to be taught this way. I have always found that you need to teach your animal that it can trust you and if all you are doing is caging it and letting people poke at him or her all day then that dog is not going to trust a human at all which would make for a very nasty show dog. She really does need to rethink her strategy for caging these animals.

That is outrageous! Most cities have regulations that you can only keep AT MOST 4 or 5 pets, otherwise you have to have a special license to house animals. So she could be breaking the law. (And if it's your house or you are the renter, you are breaking the law.) Also, take her to a pound so she can see all the animals that die due to neglectful owners.

BS!
I have 2 show dogs and let me tell you, my dogs are confident and friendly because of their exposure to the world. If I knew who she was I would personally ***** her out and report her! I know that a lot of show people do this and it FLOORS me because, at the end of the day your dog should be your dog, chasing his tail, running in the yard, playing fetch all that! So she can go to...........
Oh and let me add this is near solitary confinment like in PRISON, if she loves a dog enough to show it off she should love the dog all the time, not just when it wins.
CRAP!
Thanks for ticking me off at stupid idiots like this!

NO, dogs need socialization from their people, even show dogs need this. Over all, it's just better for the dog to be part of the family.
I sure wouldn't suggest anything illegal, but it would be nice if her dogs just got dognapped into good loving homes, now wouldn't it. You know, homes that will actually give them the love that they need.

It is animal cruelty to keep a dog caged almost 24 hr a day. She does not need to deserve to own a dog.

That is absolutely rediculous. Dogs need interaction with their families. Those dogs are being neglected and it's sad. If she can't give the dogs a loving home, she needs to find someone who can.
