As a heterosexual, practicing Catholic that goes to Mass at least twice a week, I can't stand it when I hear other Catholics say things like "gay people are going to hell" or that God hates people of other religions. A lot of people on Yahoo answers are giving Catholocism a bad name. Does anyone else find this disturbing?

I agree that engaging in homosexual acts is a sin. However, so is sex outside of marraige and all forms of birth control. All of those sexual sins, by Catholic doctrine, are mortal sins, yet some people partake in all kinds of sexual sins, then say that gays are going straight to hell. I can't really say what God would do, and I wouldn't want people to judge me, which is why I have neither the power nor the right to send anyone to hell.

+ Homosexuals +
The Catholic Church believes there is nothing sinful about being homosexual. But homosexuals like all unmarried people are called to celibacy.
The Church specifically says that homosexuals "must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided."

+ Other Religions +
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
+ About Non-Catholic Christian Churches: "Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth" are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: "the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements." Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.
+ About Judaism: "The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant. To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ"; "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
+ About Islam: The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day.
+ About other non-Christian religions: All nations form but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city.

Yes I find it disturbing as the word catholic means all. I think we should accept the fact that some people are truly homosexual. In fact I have situation in my own family. I have an aunt and a great aunt who are clearly homosexual. My grandma refuses to believe her sister is a lesbian and does not let my aunt girlfriend visit on holidays. But I also believe in the teachings that we should live according to God which at present moment doesn't seem to want same sex marriage.

YES!! This is an awful thing to say. To be so presumptuous to think they know what decision God is going to make is assinine.
Plus, God doesn't hate anyone!
I like the line in RENT "Sodomy, it's between God and me!"
ha! I have to agree.
I like what the Catholic Church mainly stands for and I wish these awful people wouldn't spew such garbage... but I guess that's how I feel about most things, there will always be someone giving something you believe in a bad name!

I'm Catholic, and yeah, you can't say outright that gay people are damned. The Catholic Church has declared that certain people, saints, are in Heaven, but never that anyone, even Judas, is in Hell. And God doesn't start loving people more when they become Catholic; He loves all equally. So yeah, Catholics need to make it clearer that we believe that certain things are wrong, but we can't judge that people are going to Hell, because no ones knows that except God.

As a Catholic I find it hard to believe Catholics are saying such things. You realize that we are taught to hate the sin, but love the sinner because each of us have sin to contend with in our lives. As far as other religions and going to hell, this is not ours to judge. Jesus will judge who deserve hell and who deserves heaven.
Do I believe that Roman Catholicism is the first and total message of Christ. Of course as I am certain others of different faith think the same way.

unfortunately all people often forget -- let ye who is without sin cast the first sin.... judge not least ye be judged....
i find that in various denominations it is running rampant - how about those who come out of mass/services and are cutting people off, yelling at someone to get out of the way, cursing at others.... the list is endless.
i do concur and find it disturbing. while i've never said the above, i have been guilty of not being a Christian at times. this is when i'm thankful i can go to my priest and talk it through. he will help me along and offer me wonderful scriptures and thoughts while i'm in the confessional!

It's not only Catholics it's Christians in general.
Please realize that Catholicism is very, very mis-understood by Protestants. It's even mis-understood by most Catholics a well! People need to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church before jumping to any harsh conclusions.

I am a Catholic, and there are many things in
the Cathloic religion I disagree with , however
I do not judge anyone as to weather or not they
will go to heaven or hell as there is only one
that can do that. As for making comments about
other people and their preference of sex, I do
not critize anyone; I do have my opinions and
I express them in a respectful way so as to
express my opinion , that's all; and if we all
did that then we would not be judges we would
just be communicaters.

To a point yes, I agree full heartedly that God hates no person or being what so ever, no God does not even hate Satan.
That being said, Homosexuality, or rather the participation in homosexual acts, is a sin, regardless of whether or not you want it to be, it is. While I would condemn them straight to hell, Id inform them that they ought to go to confession and refrain from doing any more "acts"
amen I say to you amen, and each one of them chould be criticized for their actions, I admitidly fell pray to one, and since participating in it have gone to confession to clense my soul. Those that choose not to, or have come to believe that "god really would care if I did it or not" are sadly mistaken.
