It may well be a heart problem, and you need to get help sooner than later. I would say that you can't really afford *not* to go to the doctor right now! There is a blood test (BNP) which can help in the diagnosis. Find a free health clinic, if necessary. The good news is that the primary medications for heart failure are now generic and therefore inexpensive. The bad news is that it has to be taken extremely seriously. The prognosis is extremely poor without some of the modern interventions such as ACE Inhibitors, Beta Blockers, bi-vent pacemakers, etc. While you are waiting to see the doctor, cut way back on sodium. You may also find it is necessary to restrict your fluid intake. Also, palpitations are often brought on with caffeine. Weight loss can't hurt, but you don't really know that obesity is causing your problems.

Lymph-edema can cause this and there is no certainty as to what causes this. If there is no blood clot, why go to a surgeon. All they understand is "cut". Just a thought. As long as the pedal pulses are strong and intact, capillary refill is brisk.I don't understand why you are being referred to a surgeon. Is your circulation impaired? Peripheral vascular disease can cause this and also Peripheral arterial disease can be going on.Find out what your diagnosis is. I doubt it's "swollen foot with unknown etiology. I hope you get the help you need.

Could be retaining water. I have to take a pill a day for that problem. If it goes untreated it could lead to congestive heart failure. Sometimes it's related to high blood pressure. Check with your doctor. It probably is serious enough to seek medical attention.

You could have broken bones in that foot if you have dropped something heavy. You could have something that has been embedded in your foot causing an infection.
