Well, of course when you talk about WWII you know that technically there were actually two different wars going on: the European theater, in which the U.S.--composed primarily of Army troops--fought against Germany and Italy. In the Pacific theater, we fought Japan and this is where the vast majority of the Navy nd Marines served. The war was composed primarily of sea battles for the Navy and of "island hopping for the Marines. This is where they took over several islands, one by one, heading towards Japan, as we got closer and closer to their mainland. This was deadly, brutal, guerrela style warfare, where we learned many of the techniques that would later be used by our troops in Vietnam. Many of those island battle waged by our Marines became famous: Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and Tarawa. We basically depleted the Japanese forces with this island hopping strategy, and indeed would have still forced Japan to surrender even without dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagaskaki in the Summer of 1945.

I don't think you can summarize briefly but I will try.
The Marines are a part of the Dept. of the Navy (not that they like to admit it) and are considered by many to be the fighting arm of the Navy. They fought the land portion of the battles for the Navy. The Navy fought against the opposing navy's in direct battle as well as arial combat with carrier based aircraft.
Also, the Navy had a very important role in transport (both Marines and Army troops) as well as resupplying U.S. and allied military bases.
Navy also did coastal patrols and sunk many enemy submarines while protecting our coasts.
Mostly the Navy fought the war in the Pacific while the Marines and Army fought the war in Europe.
