I was like your daughter...I had waist long hair that was very thick and hard to get the soap out of it. I think I started washing my own hair around 7, though my mom still brushed it for me. I'm still only 17 yrs old so I don't really have much practice with kids, I asked my mom though. She said that she would let me do it but at the end she would give me a last rinse or two....you know, just a quick run over to make sure I got all the soap out.
Good luck!

First of all, I don't think you get dandruff from not rinsing the shampoo out of hair well enough. Get her some kids shampoo, Loreal makes a nice one for kids. I've also seen the tangle free shampoo for long hair. She can take her tubby, but then when it comes time to shampoo, set her up in the shower and instruct her as to how much shampoo to apply, how that massage the shampoo into her scalp and hair, and then how to put her whole head under the shower and rinse her hair. I've been washing my own hair forever--didn't really have any one who cared about getting the shampoo out. My grandson is 5, and he does a could job on his own. He's a swimmer, though, and doesn't mind holding his breath or what when he rinses.

I'd tell the 9 year old to do it herself. I've had long hair all my life and by 6 I could wash it by myself. By 8 I was taking showers instead of baths since its easier to rinse long hair with the constant flow of clean water. Hand her a kids shampoo and tell her to wash it. She has had her hair washed for 9 years now, she should remember how it works.

My daughter has been taking a shower on her own for a while, without my help but I always used to check and make sure she rinsed really good. She was doing ok so I just let her go now all by herself, she is 7

My 6 yr old has hair down almost to her butt and she washes her own hair. She does a good job too. I have her rinse it under the water while it's running and the force of it helps to rinse everything out.

If she's ready to do it then let her. But I do recommend that you check it after she's done and before it's try. That way you can ensure that she won't be getting any dandruff. This could take more of your time up because she'll probably mess up a few times, just have her practice on the weekends. Good luck!

Hi there.
My boys started at 7. Let her be a big girl and just double check before she gets out of the shower. I did that a few times with the boys until they knew when it was rinsed enough.
Good luck

Let her do it herself but supervise!! If she doesnt rinse well enough then tell her she is doing good, but needs to rinse a little more or you are going to have to do it for her, she'll end up getting it right eventually!!

You should probably cut her hair shorter so that it won't be so hard for her to wash it. The first time you have her wash her hair, you should rpobably show her how, step by step, then rinse it and have her do it. I think she should start washing when she's about 5 years old. I have a lttile sister who started at about 5.
