We have a miniature schnauzer that is almost seven years old. Within the past few months he has begun to get us up once or twice a night to go outside to urinate. He acts like 'I gotta go right now'. His daytime habits haven't really changed. He's eating and drinking the same as he always has, but he's driving us crazy with all these sleep interuptions. Is this a behavior problem or health issue?

Have your vet take a look at him. A few possibilities:

Urinary tract infection
Bladder stones (Schnauzers are prone to these)
Cushing's Disease
Diabetes

Since you say his eating and drinking haven't changed, I'd lean towards the first two, as opposed to the last two.

That can be normal aging for small breeds, but I'd take him to the vet to rule out any health problems, like an enlarged prostate, or a urinary tract infection, just to be safe.

Sounds like perhaps a UTI (urinary tract infection). Take him to the vet and have him screened. It's easy to clear up with antibiotics. Good luck.

Ever had a bladder infection? You really DO have to go RIGHT NOW!

Incidently, our screennames are very close. :)

At seven, he is getting up in age. But I would take him to your vet. It may be nothing, but age coming to play, but I would have him checked out. He may have a urinary track infection, or some other medical issue. But to be sure, have him checked by your vet.

A dog his age should be able to hold it longer. It could be a medical issue like diabetes, or a bladder problem. I would take him to the vet and have him checked.

Well, we humans get more like that as we get on in years too. I'd say to get him checked by the vet to make sure there isn't any kind of underlying medical issue.

He might have a urinary tract infection or possibly urinary incontinence. Take a urine sample to your vet to rule out the infection, then go from there.
