If he is under nourished he needs food little and often to give his body the best chance of absorbing all the nutrients.
Three times a day is great - you don't say how old he is but if he is under 12 weeks I'd even make it 4 times a day.
Keep with the 3 meals until he is about 4 to 5 months. You may find that he naturally starts to go off one meal once he reaches a better weight. If this happens - stop feeding it but ensure you are feeding more at the other times so that he still gets his full daily allowance of food.
Keep an eye on his appearance to judge his weight - does he look lean and fit or drawn and skinny? Also, you don't want to get too much weight on him or it will interfere with his growth and put strain on his soft under developed joints.
Hope things go well and congratulations for giving him a chance at a happier life with you!

It depends on how old he is and the size he is. Right now until he gets to a healthy weight i would feed him 4 small feeds a day, then 3 once he is a good weight for a few weeks then i would drop it to 2 plus leave dry biscuits out so he doesnt develope food aggression issues but always remove uneaten wet food from a feed. If he is leaving food lessen the amount you give him at each feed. If you leave dry food he will realise there will always be food so he wont have to scoff his food or guard it.

I feed my healthy dog twice a day with snacks in between. For a malnourished puppy, I would have food out all the time. Once it gets back to normal, decrease feedings, but increase portion size..... =0)

I feed my jack russell twice a day to make sure her body digests properly. She is happy with this.
with your dog it will depend how under weight and what kind and size. When she is up to weight it should be ok to do twice a day same amount split into 2 meals. although some people like to feed once.
Its best to go on the dogs needs.Check with your vet he will advise better he will know the dog better than us. But we feed our in morning then at 5 in afternoon.she happy and has time to digest food before we go to bed and passess whats needed and never needs to get up in night and never had any tummy problems

Since your pup is malnourished, I would leave food out for it all the time so it can put some weight on. How old is it? At 6 mo I would start feeding it twice a day, morning and night.

I feed my 1yo and 3yo dogs 1x a day in the evening (bout 6pm). I used to leave whatever they didn't eat out for the morning, but they aren't interested in food in the morning.

Make sure you are feeding a QUALITY dog food like Artemis, Wellness or Innova. Do NOT feed Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Purina or anything else you can find at the grocery store.

Once he reaches and maintains a healthy weight for about a month then you can go to feeding him 2x a day. To determine the amount to give him, go by his weight and the amount that is written on the bag.
