You will most likey need to pay the bill to get the car and then turn around and sue. Go with him as a witness to verify he disputed that some of the work was not authorized.

First off do not help a friend fight there own fight! Next see if there is an attorney that will take the job on consignment. Attorney only earns when they win. Actualy only the approved repair needs to be paid and drive away. You might need police back up. And police will not get involved in personal financial matters. Just say the shop has stolen my car after they attempt to pay only for approved repair or take them to court small clames take about a year to get resoultion.
