Mech Bob must be to young to be familiar with Fords longest running gas engine. it started life as the 240 ci in 1964 in the full size lineup of Fords and pick ups, it got a stroker kit in 68 to make it a 300 ci for the pu. It's a inline six, so impossible to confuse with a V8

It actually has a racing heritage in both Nascar and drags, remember the 4 dr Maverick called Prep H, for H class? I think his name was Gliddin or something, You can actually pull 450+ hp out of it :)

this engine was used in Ford pu's until 1996

I've spend a lot of time on this one, because it's one of my favorite engines :) I have one that came out of a race car and has 3x2 carbs at 450hp!

4.9 6cyl ??
Are you sure you have 6 cyl. ??
.
I think you meant the 4.9 V-8
Forget the power chip, for a moment.
What transmission do you have?
How many miles on the odometer?
Do you have the heavy duty tow package?
How heavy is your boat?
What is the tongue weight of your trailer?
When was the last time you had a good, thorough tune up?
.
Believe it or not, the 4.9 was no powerhouse. Ford was never happy with this motor, and most fleets opted for the oil burner made by International.
If you have everything working right, and you are hauling at or below your limit, you should have no problem.
Double check to make sure of your weights, especialy the tongue weight. Make sure the trailer tires and your truck tire have the proper inflation pressure.

You may THINK you need more power, but I gotta tell you, that old 4.9 straight 6 was considered the "workhorse" of the industry.
It was the standard engine in all the Ford trucks,F-Series & Econoline Vans
I sold many of these trucks when they were new & I've had many of these traded in after many, many miles & after being worked to near rubble ...but guess what ...they still ran! I remember a plumber trading in a 10 year old E350 Super Cargo Van...the thing was SO beat up , from years of abuse, but it had 317,000 miles on it & still ran WELL. This plumber bought another one just like it......same engine!
My own brother sold his pick-up with 167,000 miles, only because he needed a supercab after adopting a 6 year old child & needed a back seat.

I don't know what kind of boat (weight) you're trying to tow, but that vehicle should be able to "pull " plenty of weight.
Your engine has 145 horsepower, but it has 265 lb ft torque.
Torque is what you need to pull....not horsepower.

I am aware of no chip available for this motor which is a 300 cubic inch straight inline six cylinder design, it is a great torque motor, if you are after more power the suggestion of upgrading the camshaft is good you can try here for some performance parts for your engine http://www.cliffordperformance.net/

those autos all suffered this condition at one element or yet another. all of it comes right down to a significant voltage provide breakdown coupled with a intense-pressure damage-down as well. what's major right it is that more desirable than one equipment is failing on the exact same instantaneous. you ought to replace the 'duralast' ignition field alongside with the coil and cap-rotor aspects at that exact same time. you ought to assume that the 'plugs' are gasoline 'logged-saturated' and may get replaced as well. you will be able to re-susitate the poorly functioning ignition by using arising a higher spark-hollow ,by using lifting the 'coil' cord up off the cap a a million/2 in. at the same time as cranking the engine for a hopeful start up. This route of technology/excitement will be conducive to the engine operating extremely reliable. do no longer close it off ! what's on the middle of this hassle is a ways previous maximum mechanic's comprehension's. it really is a gloomy technological know-how that desires to be buried for reliable!

that 4.9 l should have lots of torque to pull but no speed they never did consider up grading the ignition components with a high grade and air induction unit so it breathes better see how that does ,

no. you don't need one either. what you got is the best truck for pulling. those old inline 6's are some of the best work engines ever made.

try lowering the gearing a little

maybe shift kit for tanny or lower gears for rear end. without engine mods ie; cam, headers, bigger throttle body for fuel, just for your consideration
