Based on the christian faith.
To sin places you away from your gods grace. It is a death sentence. The only way out is through forgiveness through the son.
That's how their god set up the rules.

Good question. As long as ones belief in sin remains, it is punished. The wage is death. The sinner is an eternal suicide, until he turns from the love of sin. The deeper the love of sin is, the longer the duration of punishment must be, until the love of sin is extracted from consciousness through Christ. It is not a question of human years or anything like that.

Because that's the wrong way Christians or other believers pictured hell. My view is quite different. First, I would say there is hell. But unlike some believers I believe this hell is not eternal in nature and its description aptly fit the earth. So my conclusion is that if hell exist then earth is the one. Two, there is no eternal damnation. Karma(which is also indirectly mention in the bible as "reap what you sow) and rebirth or reincarnation are the keys why punishment is not eternal. You are only punished accordingly to the gravity of your sin by rebirth and undergoing the same sinful treatments you have done to your neighbors. It is in this process that you learn from mistake and evolve into purity and wisdom. They will have difficulty explaining your question because of their wrong premise about hell.
