I was just talking to a coworker about this..hey that means I was actually talking physically to someone...LOL

Yes and no...but it depends on the person...some people dive more into chatting, texting, communicated by technological means...and few are still good at the art of true communication intimacy with people in front of you...it is becoming a lost art among many...I think unfortunately.

I myself have about 3 people I talk deeply with in person, 3 people I talk deeply with on the phone and about 4 I chat with electronically..I make sure I have a balance at all times.

The others are all surface oriented...

We've definately lost the art of sitting round a fire an communicating.
It's just changed medium.
Your getting responses from loads of people, some of who'm you might think twice about speaking to based on visual perception, harsh you might think.
But, because of all the information in the world we have to stereotype it to process it.
Half the time we get it wrong, that's what great about about the anonnimity of the Net.

An nowdays when you try an start a conversation an people think your nuts.
Thats why the weather's such a safe topic.

An people are scared generally, their faith is effected by all the bad things that happen in the World, you can have a real discussion using the net an not worry about someone over hearing a small part of a conversation an it causing real aggression.
Couple that with the fact that the very idea of free speach is endangered through political correctness gone mad, an I can see why people would be wary of talking openly.

There's still a lot of narrow minded people out there who just cant accept an open mind an kinda freak when you move off safe topics, that's why I can't hang with my friends in certain places cus people just talk BS when their there. Sometimes I wonder if they can ever hear what their saying an quite how biggoted it is.

I'm not bitter, I just long for real, in depth conversation.

There's always someone on here to connect with.
That's a very good thing.

It's true, the only way nowadays to have a conversation with anyone anymore is through texting basically, or IMing or emailing. Which is pathetic. Whatever happen to picking the phone up and calling someone to see how there day was or going to visit them or going out spending quality time with someone in person instead of through a piece of plastic or metal??? Technology has made some people disfunctional in that area. I guess some people's mouths have gone caput. It's a shame really.

most people don't even no there next door neigboures these days, it began when TV was introduced back in the 1960/s.
Technology has progressed so fast since then that people don't have to talk as all the news comes through this glass screen in the corner of the room.
I think people in the UK are worse of all for not smiling at each other and talking to others especial in the mornings.

Funny thing is, I had a similar thought myself a couple of times recently. But then again, I wonder about the quality of what it is they have to say!

There have been stories in the press about people (usually teens) who are 'addicted' to sending text messages on their phones ~ apparently sending 'dozens' a day. And again, I've wondered about the quality of what they are sending and how they would justify their messages.

Given some questions here (and some answers too), I'm not really that certain that I'd want to hold a conversation with the person/s, judging their ability to string their words together! Call me a cynic, if you like, but to me, a lack of education and any mental stimulation simply amplifies a lack of any desire for people to want to improve their selves ...their ability to communicate.

Technology, the vast array of it, for What?

What is there that is so Important that we as individuals need it in order to communicate ~ What?

Sash.

i think in a technology has a lot to answer for!
but i also think that it has helped me to be able to balance children with friends.
I have 2 girls and a husband... i find it really hard keeping in touch with a lot of friends and for a lot of them i am afraid if it wasn't for text messaging or Internet i would have lost touch with them a long time ago.. also through the Internet i have made a lot more.. i think the problem isn't so much technology as it is that life
just got in the way.. i do try to see my friends at least once a month but most my friends finish work while i am right in the middle of getting my kids ready for bed.

Couple of months ago, i have seen an document in news saying that in 1980 averange american had 3 friends and now in 2006 average american has 2 friends so this proves whats going on.........
In the mean while people are getting reserved and picky, also in this days talking to strangers is a hard thing because they are already busy with their work like listening to mp3 players, texting, phone conv and so many...

I too feel like talking to many many people , if it happens i will be happy too.

It will be good if everybody in the world shows intrests in the other(like talking, helping and many things.....)

Yeah technology has caused alot of distractions! No kidding, I also think that alot of times in public when people are sitting alone what I think is they dont want people to look at them and think oh look that person must be a loser because they are here alone so they talk on there phone or text or play on their computer. I think its a insecure thing.

I think it depends on the time and place..for example; if i am up at a ridiculous hour with nothing to do, then i like to communicate with like minded people through technology. However, put me in a room full of people and i can chat for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland........I think both ways of communicating are good as long as there's a balance.

We've individualized public space! Technology has allowed people to basically have their own little world while still in public. You've basically hit the nail on the head.

I have a pop culture class about this, and we talked about this a lot...
