Most people don't know much about Judaism; also, many people have sort of a default assumption that everybody they talk to is Christian. When they find out that you aren't exactly what they expected, they may be embarrassed, or just feel they don't know what to say. Don't worry about it -they'll get over it.

I don't know where you are when you tell people that you are Jewish.
If everyone becomes silent and awkward, they are uncomfortable and/or embarrassed with the information they have received.
Why?
It's impossible to know because you have not given enough information about the situation.
I don't want to say that they are anti-semites or make any other negative remarks.
However, I have a question for you. What do you do after all the silence and awkwardness?
You know a Jew always answers a question with another question - that's the Jewish way and I like keeping traditions.

I am also Jewish, and at times dependent on where I am, I may get a look when I say that, and yes some silence. But, I could care less of what people think and I carry on and talk about it. Most people do not know about Judaism and are afraid to ask so they go silent.

I am Jewish to. I only tell people if they see my Star of David and/or ask me.
People might go silent because they do not know many Jews and do not know what to say.
Also do you just blurt it out, because if you do that will be a cause for people to go silent and it will become awkward.
They could also be Anti-Semitic, but be your friend and that could be bad.You need to be careful when you say that you are Jewish, I do not mean hide it but do not tell anyone that unless the subject comes up, they ask you or if someone is insulting Judaism then you have a cause to speak up but if not just do not tell anyone.
The way I act is if someone ask or something act like it is no big deal that you are Jewish because it is perfectly normal.
Also if they act like that ignore them it will pass.

That happens to me constantly in the US. People think that they know what a Jew looks like (I look exactly like my avatar). I have had people tell me that it is rude to joke about being Jewish.
I now live outside the US in a mostly Muslim community. Because people here do not have a picture in their heads they react to me saying I'm Jewish just as if I said "I like ice cream".
What is funny is that I belong to the Jewish community here (only 50 families - 90% of the Jewish community here died in Croatian concentration camps during WWII). I have overheard them explain to new people that meet me that in America, many Jews are dark skinned. I am the only image they have in their heads of an American Jew.

It's because of upbringing. Most non-Jewish parents are at least somewhat anti-Jewish. And most Jewish parents are at least somewhat anti-Gentile.
This awkwardness will not be resolved until Beauty and Bands becomes one (unity between Judah and Israel (No Judah is not the totality of Israel, it is only one tribe out of 12), as prophesied by Zechariah (Zechariah chapter 11).

it happened to me only when ppl asked me "so what does your family do for Christmas" or the like.
It can be really awkward, but the other person felt weird, and tried to apologize, which made it even more weird. I just smiled and got over it quickly.
If you live in the South or in a predominantly coherent area, it happens because of ignorance. Just ignore it.

Because they don't want to offend you. With some Jewish people, it's like walking on egg shells. Just be yourself and let the truth prevail!

To tell you the truth I'll have to say I'm a little jealous. Jesus was Jewish and the Jewish people are his chosen ones. That's what I have been taught. You should be so proud!!!!!
