Yes, there is a mistranslation -- in the Septuagint, it is called a virgin. In the Hebrew Bible, the word is "a young woman of marriageable age."

The old testament also specifically says that the messiah will be a military leader and a king, neither of which Jesus was (though, there are theories that the historical Jesus was a violent revolutionary zealot, a notion that is not at all crazy). If one takes a critical look at the text of the gospels, one realizes that the writers of the gospels just lifted random passages of the OT and inserted them into the text. For instance, the actual crucifixion story is just a retelling of Psalm 22. Or the supposed prophecy about the messiah being named Immanuel in Isaiah, even though he wasn't speaking of the messiah but rather the contemporary king's son; and, I should also point out that Jesus' name was not Immanuel. It's also why Jesus seems to go all over the place as a baby. The authors (Matthew and Luke) borrow parts of the story of Moses (such as the murder of the first born sons by the current king) and other heroes of the old testament to make it seem as though Jesus were prophesied.

It's interesting that I'm the only person to answer with something other than "Well, he was god, duh!"

The Hebrew word which is translated as "young women" in my Bible (Good News Bible, 2nd Edition) doesn't mean a virgin, but does mean a young lady of marriageable age.
To be called Christ Jesus had to fulfill a whole lot of prophecies, not just one or two. That was why when Jesus asked the question "Who do people say I am?" the disciples said the people said he was a prophet because the people had only seen a few things like healing or heard his teaching, but when he asked who the disciples thought he was Peter said he was the Christ because Peter had seen many of the prophetic requirements filled.

I and the Father are one Jn 10:30
"Jesus said to them, But whom do you say I am? Simon Peter answered and said; Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God".
Mt 16:15-16

Jesus proved He was the Messiah through the many miracles He performed. A miracle can only be performed through an act of God. God does not perform a miracle in favor of a lie. His greatest miracle is His resurrection from the dead.

His prophecies have already been fulfilled include: those about His Passion, death, and Resurrection, denial by Peter, betrayal of Judas, the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the persecution of His followers, the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, the preaching of the Gospel throughout the whole world.

Merry Christmas.

er... Hi!

The book of Isaiah in my bible says "a virgin " (NKJV)

and

Since you claim to know so much of the bible... why don't you look up the following prophesies...

compare:
Mathew 2:6 to Micah 5:2
Mathew 2:15 to Hosea 11:1
Mathew 2:18 to Jeremiah 31:15

WOW! 3 very distinct prophecies about Jesus in only One chapter of the gospel of Mathew. why don't you read all Four gospels of the disciples (Mathew, Mark, Luke and John) and see for yourself....

Cause Jesus Christ IS the Messiah.

Are you saying Mary wasnt a young girl? Whether "virgin" meant young girl or physical virgin doesnt matter, she was both. Probably so it covered both sides of the argument. Im sure if she was JUST a young woman, people would argue she needed to be a physical virgin as well. But, as we see.... God had all sides covered :)

That is not the only prophecy by a long shot regarding Jesus and the Messiah (Christ). It is not a contradiction anyway.

when it says Matthew that she was a virgin this is better translated as young girl just like the Hebrew. however it was likely that she was a virgin because the spirit of God is what made her pregnant.

Jesus claimed to be the son of God. The Pharisees said this and tried to stone him.
An accident occurs. Three witnesses are question.
They see some details a little different.
So it is with the prophets. Same theme but seen a little differently.
