You be hard press to find anything better than the Ruger 10/22 carbine. It is made in regular carbon steel, or stainless steel, with a wood stock, or synthetic plastic stock. Retail price is about $200- 225. It is one super gun. See it, and handle one at a gun store, and I'm sure you will agree with me.

I have to disagree with everyone. I don't know about all you paper shooters, but the best huntin 22 rifle I have every used has been the 572 fieldmaster by Remmington.

If anyone wants to complain that it is a pump, then hit em with the first shot and it won't matter.

I also love my 510 targetmaster by Remmington. Now it's a single shot, but it's a pure shooter.

I was foolishly given a Marlin 22 as a gift once. Damn things are jam happy.

Ruger 10/22 is a very solid, dependable gun. I've put thousands of rounds through mine and it just keeps going. My only complaint is that the trigger pull is a little stiff from the factory. It can be fixed however.

My Dad owns a Remington 572 pump-action. It is dead accurate and has the advantage of shooting .22 LR, L, and Shorts.

I would recommend the Ruger 10/22 for plinking and rabbit hunting where quick successive shots can be useful. The Remington 572 I would recommend for squirrel hunting where accuracy and the ability to use .22 shorts comes in handy.

Everyone is saying Ruger 10/22 is the best, but it's an ugly gun. I own a Remington .22, a Marlin .22 mag, and a Smith and Wesson .22 pistol. The Remington is pretty good. If you want to be able to modify your gun to look like an assault rifle, go with the 10/22, because there are all kinds of kits to do that, and lots of bigger magazines.

I prefer the Remington 510, I have had two, one of which was a old barn gun, very rusty, and had a different bolt, but still shot accurate!

The other one was mine and I kept it up and it still shoots great!

The Remington 597s look good, are accurate, and all you can ask for in an .22 autoloader for target, practice, plinking, or hunting.

The ruger 10/22 is a good firearm, there are literally tons of after market accessories to make it look like any sort of rifle from bullpup to sks etc. They have pretty good accuracy and have good reliability. They are also cheap as there are tons used. But, I would take a look at what Remington has to offer, their guns in general and especially in .22 haven't let me down yet and are of great quality, superb accuracy and great reliability.

Marlins are good also, I haven't used the semi-autos but their levers are good and pretty fun for a .22 lever action! Great gun to enjoy shooting and plinking with.

Without a doubt it's the Browning T-Bolt. For semi-auto fans a Browning 22 is and has been the standard.
