My office has been bombarded with fruit baskets, chocolates, fruitcakes, cookies, you name it from our vendors this Christmas. Everyone is about burnt out on sweets. Anyway, today we received a really nice meat and cheese basket. This girl ran up and grabbed it stating"I'm on Atkins-you all can have the rest but this is mine!" and took it to her car. A few months ago it was her birthday and we all pitched in and got her a cake. When we gave it to her she said "this is too beautiful to cut, I'm taking it home to show my husband". How rude is she?

Don't bother to give her anything on her next birthday again. And also exclude her in any birthday celebration for other colleagues. She should sense something wrong if you all did so.

Yes, that is rude and selfish. Furthermore, the difference between taking one whole basket and 1/10th of 10 baskets is that you are denying others any opportunity to partake. If you only take one item from a cookie tray, there are plenty of cookies left for others. If you take the whole tray, nobody else gets to try that specific tray.
Each gift you mention was sent to the whole office, therefore the whole office should be allowed to share. Maybe there were other people in the office who were tired of sweets and would have enjoyed the meat and cheese.
Ultimately, the gift was not given directly to her, and she should not have acted as though it was.

that is pretty messed up. if all of her co-workers pitched in for a cake the least she could have done was share it with everyone. at least that is how things are done at the office i work in. and the baskets that the office has received should also be shared by all of the employees. meaning that the food should be eaten in the office as a snack, unless everyone agreed upon everyone getting to take something home. someone should tell her how rude she was. maybe in an anonymous letter left on her desk!!!!!

Yikes, that's really selfish. Usually I share everything with my coworkers, no matter what it is, and they share back. Sometimes they don't, and my being 16 I can't really confront my elders, can I? Lol...
Unless she's a lot younger than you and you are actually in an age appropriate position to give her advice, I wouldn't confront her. That just makes things tense and doesn't even work most of the time.
Maybe next time she does something like that, you could say "But we bought you the cake we really want to share it with you" or "This was given to the office let's see if we can use it for something we all can enjoy."

No one is entitled to anything whether it's free or paid for. She should ask the boss or whoever is in charge if she could have a bite, or a cookie always. Yes, that is rude. Perhaps she thinks she is cute or funny, but no, that is no class and manners. If I were her I would have SHARED the cake with everyone, but really since it was hers, she could do whatever she likes with her cake. Selfish--yes.

Well, she might not be rude like you think she was just probably honest on her opinion. Sometimes we think when the person is too honest we mistaken it as being rude. She could also just been joking around. Anyway there is always two sides in a story this is your but we don't know hers.

Of course she is selfish. If you want it to stop but you don't have the courage to say it to her face, may I suggest that you make a printout of your question and all the answers you have been getting. Leave this paperwork on her desk!! See if her attitude changes after that. Some people genuinely don't get it until you are direct with them.

She could at least gave you a little taste of it, leave half the cake
for her co-workers, Well, next time, nobody should do anything for her, she'll get the point!

you bought the cake for HER, she should be able to do as she pleases with it. that's like buying someone 2 tickets to a concert for their birthday and then being mad when they say "thanks my husband and i will have a great time." furthermore, what's the difference between her taking one whole basket or 1/10th of 10 other baskets? i don't think she was rude at all. i do, however, think that i do a good job of playing devil's advocate...
