Some strings of wired lights are wired so that the lights of a section following a burned out bulb will not light. Try replacing the loose or burned out bulb at the beginnings or ends of sections where bulbs appear to not be working. (If you did not keep the spares when you purchased the bulbs you can sometimes find replacements at hardware stores during the holiday season.) Otherwise you may need to purchase new strands of lights.

How many strands of lights do you have strung together? If you have more than three, you have most likely blown the fuses in the lights. So, change the fuses and make sure you have no more than three strands together. Now, if that doesn't work, then give your lights a shake because you may have a loose connection. If that doesn't work, then you may have some bulbs burnt out.
In the future, ALWAYS work with the strands of lights ON. This will eliminate the problem of plugging in the lights and finding that all your work was for not.

In the male plug, there are tiny fuses. These are designed to blow if you ad too many strings to the line, or there are too many dead bulbs in that section of the line. And sometimes they blow for no reason. If one blows, it just affects the portion of the string that it goes to.
Look closely at the plug, and take a small flat head screw driver to pry open the fuse holder. It usually just slides out.
It is hard to check these fuses, unless you have electrical multi-meter.
Two solutions if this is it.
1. Usually, the package comes with one or two extra fuses.
2. I have taken solid copper wire - stripped it - and cut it small enough to fit into the little fuse holder.
Now this is not advisable - since it negates the safety purpose of the fuse. So I'm just telling you what I've done - not telling you to do it.
My house is still standing - and i was the Chevy Chase (Christmas Vacation) of my block.
