It is not necessary to pray with your eyes closed.

Praying with the eyes closed is a form of reverence. I was told when I was young that you should see Jesus but later I learned that you pray with head bowed and eyes closed as a form of repect and understanding that prayer is special and that God is more powerful than you could ever imagine. Did you know that Jewish priests died while praying in God's presence before Christ died?

When I pray with my eyes closed, I don't "see" anything. I am making sure that I am not distracted by what is going on around me so that I can have a conversation with God and communicate with Him about how I am feeling.

In order for prayer to be affective, you need to have a balanced amount of Intention and Attention. (Really! This is no B.S.!) These are the two tools you use to get that message, desire, favor, etc...out there to the Almighty, the universal energy, The source, (my favorite) whatever you call it/him/her.....

It helps a lot of people to accomplish this by closing their eyes!
Simple as that!

As far as what you should "see" goes, it works like this.
If you meditate and pray regularly, you WILL begin to get visions.......100% guaranteed! Educate yourself regarding them. There is lots of good info available out there. Life really does have a magic side to it, and we really do receive all the help we need from the universe if we go about living and asking for it in the right manner......

Happy holidays!

Sometimes, if your eyes are closed and you rub them really hard you see cool flashes of light :D

Anyway I dont think praying requires closed eyes, especially if youre praying while driving.

Closing your eyes during prayer allows one to concentrate on the prayer and not be distracted by what one 'sees'.

I think the reason they say pray with your eyes close is so you can concentrate better, Because you can't see distractions.

I close my eyes when I pray so I don't get distracted by what's around me. You aren't neccessarily meant to 'see' anything. If God wants to show you something when you're praying, he will. When you expect him to show you something, and you ask him to and press into him, he will.

Maybe you're supposed to close your eyes to be less distracted by stimulation going on so you can focus on your prayer/meditation, etc.
