I am having a Christmas dinner and I have 9 guests. I would like to serve a ham (not a spiral ham). I found a great recipe. It says to put cloves around the outter part of the ham as well as cherries. How do I make the cherries stay in place? Do I use toothpicks or would they start on fire? Also how big of a ham should I get for 8 adults and 1 child??

Toothpicks is the right answer and no they won't catch fire and a 10-12lber should do it. Here's a key for next time, most people won't eat more then the size of their hand, beef, chicken, turkey, ham, so think of that the next time you figure out the amount and that will give you the size. When was the last time you ate more then 1 Quarter Pounder

You do use toothpicks. No they won't burn.
1 - 16 to 16 pound ham serves 6 to 8 with enough leftovers to create future dinners. You can also add a pineapple ring and place the cherries in the center of the ring securing with toothpicks.

Try using toothpicks to secure the cherries or pineapple cubes. Cloves would be too short in length to work.To prevent toothpicks from burning, soak the toothpicks in water overnight.

Kill two birds with on clove, that is what I do. I stab the cherry with the clove and stick the clove and cherry through a pineapple ring. it looks very nice and professional.
