When I lived in New York 10 years ago, a cop acquaintance of mine considered Brooklyn to be the worst borough. I think the Bronx gives it a run for its money, though. Still, there is quite a bit of variability within each borough. The northern part of the Bronx near the Westchester County border, for example, is supposed to be pretty nice. Unfortunately, the best neighborhoods are often the most expensive.

In Brooklyn, avoid Bed-Stuy, Park Heights, Flatbush, East Flatbush, Brownsville, and East New York. In Manhattan, stay away from Alphabet City and anything north of 90th st. I wouldn't take a chance with the Bronx. In Queens, Jamaica is supposed to be bad. Staten Island is relatively safe because of the high concentration of cops, but the area around the ferry terminal looked rather scary to me.

I definitely agree that the Bronx is the most dangerous. It may not be true statistically but it's where I feel the most unsafe. I've lived in Brooklyn for about four years. Over the summer I lived on the boarder of flatbush and never had a problem. My advice for a situation like that is get to know local business owners who are opened at night. The guys who worked in the 24hour bodegas always looked out for me.

Brooklyn is considered officially to be the most dangerous, but it has really nice parts that arent dangerous at all.

Each borough has good and bad parts, just try to avoid the bad ones and stay in areas with other (non threatening) looking people!

Every borough has its good and bad parts. If you go by stats, it's Brooklyn. Where I live in Brooklyn, I could come home and walk from the train station at 1 in the morning and not feel scared, and I don't even know anyone in the neighborhood! Just use your own discretion.
