Kill, what did it mean at the time it was written, did it mean to do away with a life just because or for nutrition. So there are times when its unavoidable and must be done, like self defense.
However is killing someones mentally also the same as just because.
So when God said "shall not kill" I think he meet spiritually and physically and people do kill others spiritually or mentally everyday but society fails to understand that, instead they call it depression or crazy.
People will always accept physical death over spiritually dead because it's easier to deal with. The message has always been a challenge no matter what culture or their values, however the results have always been the same, man can not change until he is shown.
The one thing man can not do change or remove the animal insist, because man is 1/2 animal 1/2 god and this I believe to be true

You have a good teaching on the 5th commandment I was taught the same. It goes farther than killing. Beating somebody up or injuring another. Taking care of our health. Following
doctor's orders. Take medicine as prescribed. Failure to do so you could be jeopardising your life, like an indirect form of suicide.

First, God creates people, therefore we belong to Him. To take a life is to take what belongs to God.
Second, killing is a symptom of a larger problem, called "sin."
Third, the sin of murder has burdened God from the first story told after the fall into sin (Gen 4, Cain and Abel) up to the present day.
Fourth, protecting and preserving our bodies and protecting and defending our neighbor from every bodily harm is a way of honoring God and giving Him thanks for His gift of life.
Fifth, the message "You shall not kill" is a message that has challenged every generation from the beginning of human kind trapped in sin and death.

Big Dawg is correct, the word in the original Hebrew is "ratsach" which does not mean "kill", it is "murder" or to "lie in wait to commit murder".
