The fourth commandment, "Honour your father and mother” teaches us that we should respect all authority figures because all authority comes from God and your parents were created to teach and love you; and be thankful for the people in life that God gave you. Why is this an important message for today's world? and Why is this message a challenge to today's culture and values?

This is an important message for today because it establishes the value of honor and respect. Unfortunately these are two character traits that are being removed from main stream society. As a result the break down of the family as a cohesive unit has occured and we have single parent families and re-married parents that are raising others children. Another result is the loss of family values and the strength of unity that comes from standing together through thick and thin. Today is about disposable everything including relationships. If it gets tough then throw it away and start over. The result of this is that men no longer know how to be men. We have lost our identity of what a real man is and don't seem to know where to find it. Since men no longer seem to know how to be men, women are at a loss of how to be women. A man is supposed to represent Jesus to his wife, a tall order and unable to be accomplished without the man submitting to Jesus, Lordship in his own life. A wife is supposed to respect her husband. Jesus loved the church, His bride to be, enough to die for her. That kind of love deserves respect.

When the accepted world view today says that I have to look out for my pleasures first, everyone looses. There is no longer any value attached to sacrifice or having a purpose in your life that exceeds your ability to accomplish in your lifetime. The result of this is empty lives that ignore God and the purpose of our creation.

No - the 5th Commandment means to Honor YOUR Father and Mother. This does not translate to honoring and respecting all authority figures simply because they are in a position of authority.

Fathers and mothers should be honored and respected when they act like fathers and mothers, providing love, care and guidance to their children.

The challenge you present about people not respecting authority figures stems from the corruption, misuse of power and general lack of true and honorable authority figures that could be honored and respected.

It would be wonderful if everyone honored and respected one another, but that seems to have come in the later true commandment of Jesus to "love your neighbor as yourself" which one could take to mean love, honor and respect all as you would like to be loved, honored and respected in return.

This Commandment is the only one with a promise. It reads: Honour thy Mother and thy Father, so the days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God hath given thee. if you don't Respect and Love your parents , you will have short days. And you will not live happy days on this land. Many young and old people do not respect their parents. They steal from them and cheat, lie and abuse the old folks. If we could keep a record on these people ,who abuse their parents, I bet their lives will be short. They will live a horrible life (no Happiness) and they will not live to be old. Many parents have not taught their children. It goes back many Generations. So now they have children with no respect for them. and the cycle has been getting worse over the centuries. satan is on a rampage.

As stated it is vacuous and potentially counter-productive. Nurturing parents who've tried to provide for their children should certainly be honored. On the other hand, abusive parents should NOT be honored by their children - and we should make every effort to protect the children in those circumstances.

If you believe that the "authority" of abusive parents comes from God, then you'd best modify your theology, or join the societies that still practice these primitive and barbarous forms of inhumanity.

Note to God: Edit that one to read. "Love and protect your children so that they may honor you."

This is the only commandment with an associated blessing...

"That it may be well with you."

Honoring all who are in authority over me (whether I agree or not) has allowed my life to be prosperous in many ways. This commandment and promise is true and good to employ in ones life.

Why would GOD COMMAND us. He made us PERFECTLY in his image and likeness. He cannot be harmed nor damaged, he seeks nothing from us, so why would he send down COMMANDMENTS? It is my belief that when you become "Enlightened" and "Aware" of "Who you ARE" then you will "realize" you are more COMMITTED to GOD. You will know you are closer to GOD, but I disagree that GOD would COMMAND US,wouldn't that thwart the purpose of our being here???? FREE WILL? FREEDOM TO MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES WITHOUT JUDGMENTS???, for GOD is ALL LOVING, and LOVE is ALL THERE IS, ALL THERE EVER WAS, And ALL THERE EVER WILL BE. In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

honouring your father and mother is exactly that and even as an atheist i believe in that.

honouring all in authority is grovelling and toadying. that's how you get ahead if you have no self respect.

the commandments weren't written by god or given by god. they were produced by moses to ensure that his followers conformed to rules that would produce an ordered society. he just said they were from god to give them some authority
