If you are talking about the ball of the foot, it is the metatarsal arch. They can fall, causing serious pain on a daily basis.

I healed mine. Here is the solution. Go to a Happy Feet store or a store that sells Birkenstocks. Our Happy Feet store (I went there when I was looking for shoes to solve my painful problems).

They carried a hard molded (fabric covered) arch support insert, that can go into any shoes and are washable. In about 1998 or 1999 they were $47.00 and I am still wearing the same ones.
As needed I throw them into the washer and they air dry in no time.

They totally corrected my very painful problem.

I hope this is helpful.

If you have a high instep (defined arches), you may need more arch support in your shoes. That should help.

could be artheritis, or could be bunions. Or it could be your arch is falling.
You need to consult with a foot specialist if you want a more thorough answer.
