Frank Zappa went down in hstory as the father who names their children the wierdest names. Moon Unit and Dweezle.

Would you be willing to name your kid a non traditional name of this nature, and if not, how wierd would you go? As an addition, what's the wierdest name you've ever seen.

Mine is Placenta. I kid you not. Of course, I grew up in Africa. Names like Spider, Trouble and Love are common (though, Placenta is not, thank God.)

So, go to it.

I thought of two more odd ones.

Angerod was a classmate in kindergarten. I remember thinking it odd back then. Still do.

Garion was a friend's son, named after a character in a fantasy novel. (I actually like this one)

I knew a girl named Female (pronounced fa-mall-ie)
I had a friend who's parents were from Africa and her name is Kideste (ka-dist-ie) but I thought that name was beautiful and unique.

Not BIZARRE like Moon Unit or Pilot Inspektor, and definitely not weird like Dweezle or Daisy Boo.

But uncommon? Yes. A different spelling? Yes.

N.B. - I do NOT mean a made-up spelling. Khate-Lhynne and D'Aymiyonne (Katelyn and Damien) are NOT cool ways to torture your kid.

For example, Bridget is considered an 'old-fashioned' name by many. It's certainly not in the top ten or probably even 100 today. One of my favorite girls' names is Brigid, which is, yes, a perfectly correct traditional Irish way to spell it. I even like traditional Irish names with 'incomprehensible' spellings. Although they are only incomprehensible to English speakers ... understanding and reading some Irish, I do not consider them weird.

The weirdest name I ever saw was Balanish. That was a girl in my 6th grade class.

It sounds like an exotic lunch meat. Let's grind up Bologna, Salami, and some other things ... and make it into a girl-shaped meatloaf. Balanish.

I'd name my kid something unusual, but I would make sure that he/she also had a "normal" middle name to switch to in adolescence/adulthood if he/she wants.
I've known a Zenobia, which I like. I like Catholic saints names and would consider naming my child: Adeodatus, Aileran, Avitus, Athenodorus, Cyprian, Chrysogonus, Erfyl, Euthymius, Maxentius, Vitalian, Zita, Zoticus, Zama, etc, etc. You can check some out here:
As for weird names, I'll go with Winebald, though I am sure there are plenty of strange ones. Check out the urban legends page on strange names, like Syphilis or Urine.

I would definitely name my children something at least not that common. It helps them be an individual. My sister's name is Ashley, and when she was growing up/going thru school, a lot of girls were named Ashley. Teachers and other kids had to call them things like Ashley A. or Ashley B.

I'd give my kid a wierd name, but nothing like Moon Unit or Placenta.

What I care about is that my kid's names are easy to say. I can't stand names that you can't even pronounce or are spelled so differently that you don't know what it is. One student of mine spelled Eric as Ayrik. Just too confusing. I don't care if they named their kid moon shadow or something- at least people can SAY that!

Well, I have a horribly common name is which causes incredible frustration and confusion. I think everyone should give their kids weird names.

My kids don't have "wierd" names...but they are uncommon. Tasia and Shiya. I don't like common names. The kids I feel sorry for are the ones named after alchol like Alazay (sp?) and Hennessy...
